Main purpose of job:

To assist the Post Security Manager (PSM) and second Deputy Post Security Manager (DPSM) with the day to day management and running of the British Embassy Addis Ababa Security team, under the direction of the Regional Overseas Security manager(ROSM)

Roles and responsibilities:

Responsible to the ROSM, through the PSM, working alongside another Deputy Post Security Manager, the DPSM’s are responsible for the day to day supervision of the physical security arrangements at the Embassy and all UK based staff accommodation.

  • Operational management of the “In House” security guard force, ensuring that they are fully conversant with and practising Embassy security procedures.
  • Liaison where required with a large external contracted guard force.
  • Liaison with the Ethiopian authorities as required at all levels in order to maintain a high standard of co-operation and effective networking.
  • Answering out of hours phone calls and attending out of hour’s incidents (on a rotational basis,) where required, to support distressed UK based staff/ traffic incidents etc.
  • Ensure security operations at the Embassy comply with UK Health and Safety Regulations.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Shared managerial responsibility for  the 54 British Embassy directly employed Guards

No direct financial management responsibility

  • At least a diploma (in any field)
  • Minimum 3 years relevant supervisory experience in the security field with a proven track record of delivering a quality service
  • Computer literacy and typing skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Be open to change and actively seek ways to improve the service of the security section.
  • Be able to manage the security service for the Embassy so that it can deliver an efficient, effective and good value for money service.
  • Ability to work quickly and reliably with little supervision to meet targets with clear and effective decision making skills.
  • Be an excellent team player and to contribute and support wider Embassy objectives.
  • Be an excellent representative of the Embassy with all contacts, including the Ethiopian authorities, other Diplomatic Missions, NGO’s and other relevant contacts
  • Full Ethiopian driving Licence (car)
  • Good contacts throughout likeminded security providers and organisations

  • Normal working hours are 36 hrs per week.
  • In addition to salary the successful applicant will receive provident fund, medical benefits, 22 days annual leave and 14 public holidays (after the probation period).
  • An out of hours Responsibility allowance will be paid.
