Main purpose of job

The British Embassy Santiago is recruiting an intern to join the Embassy’s Department of International Trade team. The intern would take up a challenging role to support the increase of bilateral trade between Chile and the United Kingdom, through market research, identification of relevant stakeholders, analysis of opportunities, coordination of meetings and events, both in Spanish an in English language. The internship will take place between September 2021 and the end of February 2022 (depending on the starting date, for 6 months).

Roles and responsibilities

The job holder will have the following responsibilities:

• Conduct market research in priority sectors such as clean growth, infrastructure, energy, health, among others, both in Chile and the United Kingdom.

• Identify relevant stakeholders in each sector and help to build long-term relationships with these stakeholders.

• Support the organisation of business meetings, from generation, content, summary and follow-up.

• Support the organisation of Embassy events, from logistics, invitations, content, etc.

• Support the joint work with the communications area to publish relevant milestones of the Department of International Trade.

• Maintain and update stakeholder databases.

• Monitor announcements of large projects and/or public policies within the priority sectors.

• Support the team in general with other projects that might arise.

The intern must be enrolled in a university/college programme that will allow them to participate in an internship “practica profesional” for 6 months, in the areas of Commercial Engineering, Business Administration, Economics, International Relations or any-related studies.

The intern must have an interest in international trade and in strengthening international collaboration between countries.

Language requirements: English and Spanish

Fluent Spanish speaker and business level English.

The ideal candidate would have previous experience and/or knowledge in market research, reporting/presenting results, and database management.

The intern must have an interest in learning from various sectors during their internship and should keep informed on the national and international contingency of the priority sectors.

The intern must have a proactive attitude to support in the different tasks that will be appointed for, ability to establish long-term relationships and pay attention to details without losing sight of the general objectives.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. 

Working patterns: Full time, some scope for remote working.

• The intern will (ideally) work full time for 6 months, subject to their availability and academic commitments. The successful candidate will have job flexibility to meet his/hers academic commitments.

• The Embassy’s working hours are 09:00 - 17:30 Mon-Thurs and 09:00 - 13:00 on Friday (36 hours per week).

There is scope for flexible working patterns – remote technology will enable role holder to work from home on certain days, particularly with regards to the situation with the C-19 pandemic in Chile and complying with public health restrictions. Must also be available to work from the Embassy on regular basis as this job will also involve face-to-face meetings with colleagues and project implementers.
