Main purpose of job:
The Handyman will perform a wide range of tasks (covering electrical, mechanical, civil and cool systems) from simple to complex as part of planned preventive maintenance regime. The jobholder needs to be capable of easily switching to various activities as and when required. He/she will be expected to learn and familiarize his/herself with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) health and safety policies for technical works operations
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
- Working in close collaboration with the Estate Team to ensure that basic maintenance works in properties and office are carried out as per FCDO standards and Health and Safety guidelines.
- Support Estate team by performing multiple maintenance tasks, which include but it not limited to electrical, civil and mechanical work. Document the work required for the property compliance assessment (PCA)
- Repair light fittings and replace when necessary, change security light bulbs, fix sockets, repair wiring and maintain electrical system.
- Basic plumbing duties such as repair and maintenance of shower heads, sink hoses, changing water filters, toilet sets lids, caulking, drains and use of power tools
- Complete all required maintenance tasks for all properties within agreed time frames and to agreed standards
- Ensure relevant contractors meet the requirements of the contracts in terms of work done and agreed time frames.
- Manage inventory of all Embassy work equipment, including electrical tools, ladders and steps.
- Ensure effective supervision of contractors at Embassy properties as appropriate
- Carry out duties related to distribution of goods and assets within properties and assist in disposing of assets when needed
- Assemble furniture and other equipment, including installation of appliances and machinery, taping, sanding, painting, fixing doors and windows.
- Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
- Inspection and testing of domestic electrical appliances, which have been provided throughout by Estates to ensure that they are in sound condition and are safe to use.
- Supervise on any work of specialised contractor/ vendor and to ensure the proper maintenance of equipment; also to check whether the work is compliance with FCDO health and safety norms.
- Respond to emergency calls and maintenance requests assigned by Estate Team. Must be able to handle the multiple tasks.
- Proactively develop how we manage our Estate, drawing on good practice and learning of FCDO health & safety policy to deliver effective maintenance of equipment and appropriate solution to faults.
- Technical Craft Certificate or proven experience in either electricity or plumbing
- Holds a recognised trade qualification (technical trade certificate or diploma) in any of the following: Electrical, Refrigeration, Mechanical, Civil Technology.
- Previous experience in Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning System, Painting, and Civil Works.
- Adequate knowledge of power generation, access control system, fire alarm system, water testing, swimming pool, gym equipment.
- Ability to identify ad hoc maintenance requirements essential for facility management services.
- Ability to manage day-to-day maintenance and support requests and other additional tasks.
- Team player who is also capable of working on their own initiative.
- Basic computer literacy
- Receptiveness, customer service oriented, flexibility and adaptability
- Valid Cameroonian drivers licence category B
- Multiple trade qualification
- At least 2 years of experience in similar organization
