Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Bamako is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.   The Defence Section, established since 2019, represents British Defence interests in Mali and the region. The driver role will help ensure the Defence Section performs to the highest level by assisting with effective and timely operations, and providing good customer service, and high safety standards. 

The jobholder will carry out daily driving duties and support the efficient functioning of the Defence Section. When required they will also support wider Embassy Operations, with the agreement of the Defence Attaché. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a safe, friendly and effective service to Defence Section personnel and MoD related visitors as required. This includes providing professional and safe driver services of an Armoured Vehicle and some messenger and administrative support.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Driving Defence Section personnel to officials meetings, appointments and functions outside the Embassy, and providing transport for related Embassy visitors. This will take place mostly in armoured vehicle, with occasional access to soft skin.
  • Distributing letters and invitations; carrying out errands, including paying bills and undertaking banking transactions on behalf of the Defence Section personnel.
  • Responsibility for vehicle care; undertaking and recording, daily vehicle checks in accordance with an agreed checklist (including but not limited to checks of electrics, fluid levels and tyres)
  • Ensuring the Defence Section vehicle is always clean, refuelled, and in good running condition.
  • In coordination with the Embassy, ensure that and that regular maintenance schedules are followed and necessary tax and insurance are up to date.
  • Overseeing routine and urgent maintenance of vehicles. Working with local garages to ensure proactive maintenance is completed in a timely and proper manner in order to ensure minimum down time of Defence Section vehicles.
  • Maintaining a daily log of all journeys and ensuring that passengers complete the Vehicle Journey Log after their trip is over.
  • Reporting any vehicle accidents and/or malfunctions to the Defence Attaché and Embassy Transport Manager, and completing necessary paperwork where applicable.
  • Further tasks as and when required in support of the Defence Section or Embassy as a whole where agreed with the Defence Attaché.
  • A clean current ‘category C’ driving licence (which permits the holder to drive heavy vehicles).
  • Excellent driving skills with attention to safety in all conditions.
  • Knowledge of local driving laws and traffic patterns.
  • Mali driver’s licence held for at least 5 years.
  • At least two years recent car driving experience in Bamako.
  • A good working knowledge of Bamako, its traffic and its principal locations.
  • Able to read and write basic French.
  • Able to speak good French.
  • Good knowledge of basic car maintenance and mechanical principles.
  • High level of personal integrity, honesty and discretion.
  • Previous experience in driving and maintaining armoured vehicles.
  • Previous experience with diplomatic missions in Mali.
  • Previous driving outside of Bamako and in poor or off road conditions.
  • Able to speak basic English.
  • Able to read and write basic English.
  • Able to speak basic Bambara.

Working patterns:

The driver will be expected to work 35.5 hours a week. Due to the small nature of the Defence Section working hours need to be flexible and will normally be between 0730 and 1800 Monday to Friday.  However, there will be a requirement for some evening work and occasional weekend work by prior agreement.  

For reference standard Embassy Hours are:

- Monday to Thursday – 8:00 to 16:30

- Friday – 8:00 to 12:30

Annual leave is 25 days in addition to 14 public holidays annually. Overtime is payable for hours work over and above conditioned hours. 

You will be required to complete 35.5 conditioned hours weekly. An overview of the flexible work scheme is provided in the mission’s Terms And Conditions Of Service.

  • The British Embassy provides a medical scheme under NALLIAS for all staff. The employee and Staff of the British Embassy, their partners, and dependent children under 21, or 25 if still in fulltime education, are covered by the scheme. A limit of 7 children.
