The British Consulate General in Milan is recruiting for a Head of Operations and Digital Marketing at the Department for International Trade (DIT) Italy.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the British Government Department set up to secure UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade. This role will be based in Milan.

This is an exciting role at the centre of the Consulate in Milan and the Department for International Trade (DIT)’s work in Italy and wider Europe. The position sits within the DIT Italy Operations team, with a strong contribution also to the DIT Europe central office. The successful candidate must be a team player and excellent collaborator, given the need to work closely with the parallel EO Business Communications Manager in DIT Operations, the Press and Public Affairs section in the Embassy in Rome, the DIT Europe Chief Operating Office and central marketing and communications team.

The successful candidate must be dynamic and flexible, able to quickly react to changing priorities and with the agility to make the most of unexpected opportunities. However, the jobholder’s proactive responsibilities will fall into three broad areas:

Firstly, the jobholder will provide senior leadership for the Consul General and Deputy Consul General’s office. This includes line management of the AO Personal Assistant to the Consul General and supporting intern, and management oversight for the work of this central office. Day-to-day diary management and administration is covered by the PA, but this jobholder will be responsible for quality control of these areas, and will lead personally on high profile visits or regional travel programmes. The successful candidate will also lead on Press engagement for the Consul General and Deputy Consul General, in close collaboration with Press and Public Affairs (PPA) section in the Embassy in Rome. Whilst mainstream Press relationships externally will continue to be led through PPA section, this jobholder will independently build and lead external relationships with the trade press based in North Italy.

Secondly, the successful candidate will lead on digital marketing for the Milan Consulate and Department for International Trade in Italy. This will include the graphic design of collateral, videos and websites for events and communications, the management of digital registration systems for events, and the creation of social media content (in collaboration with PPA section).

Finally, the jobholder will be a senior part of the DIT Europe marketing and communications team. In this capacity they will be responsible for priority digital communications projects covering the whole of DIT Europe. There is flexibility in the longer term about the specific projects to be covered, dependent on central priorities and the personal interests of the successful candidate. Current projects the jobholder would be expected to lead on focus around DIT Europe’s two campaigns on Technology and Clean Growth, and on the creation and communication of central learning and development opportunities for staff.

Roles and responsibilities:

As senior manager for HM Consul General (HMCG)’s office, expectations include:

  • Line manage Personal Assistant to HMCG/Deputy Consul General (DCG), and oversee recruitment of supporting intern (to be managed by the PA)
  • Provide oversight and quality control on HMCG and DCG office management – though the day-to-day diary management led by the PA/intern
  • Lead programmes for senior visitors to the Consulate e.g. HM Ambassador, HM Trade Commissioner, DIT Ministers, including securing Press opportunities where relevant;
  • Lead coordination of high profile regional visit programmes for HMCG, DCG in North Italy, including securing Press opportunities. Coordinate DIT contribution to HMA regional visits across Italy.
  • Forecast and track expenditure against DIT Italy budget (shared responsibility with business communications manager)

As digital marketing lead for Milan Consulate and DIT Italy, expectations include:

  • Create digital content for all events – invites, registrations, website, videos, social media and marketing
  • Social media lead – curate HMCG and DIT channels. Create content for UkinItaly/Italia channels in coordination with PPA section
  • Press engagement - Own relationships with the Trade Press as relevant to DIT Italy priorities. Work with PPA to secure Press opportunities for HMCG, DCG and senior visitors to Milan
  • Video curation – editing and creating videos for internal and external comms by DIT/HMCG
  • Website lead – Quality control and update DIT Italy and Consulate web pages, working with other section heads and Headquarters
  • DIT Europe digital comms projects: Manage DIT Europe clean growth and technology campaign websites. Lead on other projects as they arise in line with central priorities and jobholder skills/interests.

Current project as Learning and Development lead for DIT Europe (There is flexibility in the longer term about the specific projects to be covered within DIT Europe, dependent on central priorities and the personal interests of the successful candidate). Key tasks for this project include:

  • Providing regular drumbeat of learning and development (L&D) monthly opportunities on Microsoft Teams, linking to Europe’s Future Learning Lab
  • Monthly manual update of learning offer on Future Learning Lab
  • Refreshing tailored learning guides for core job families. To include certificates, badges, gamification. Ensure this is part of induction packs for new staff
  • Curating Europe-specific content for on the Future learning Lab – e.g. on market access, trade policy
  • Continuous optimisation and improvement of L&D learning offer, proactively seeking feedback
  • Owning/delivering Europe mentoring scheme
  • Running L&D drop-in surgeries
  • Owning/running DIT Europe Capability Series

The job holder is also expected to actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Italy Network.

This job will be based in Milan.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of one year with the possibility to extend for another year subject to performance and funding available.

The monthly gross salary is Euro 2.929,00. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday typically from 09.00 – 17.00, with some flexibility.

The starting date may be delayed depending on circumstances at the time and this will be agreed with the selected candidate.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a four month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
