View Vacancy - Political Team Intern
The British Embassy in Washington, is the United Kingdom’s largest diplomatic mission, is offering an internship for Fall 2016 to work for the Embassy’s Foreign & Security Policy Group, specifically within the Politics Team. The Team oversees the Embassy’s and British Government’s engagement with the administration and Congress at all levels and reporting on developments in US domestic politics, with a heavy focus this year on the upcoming presidential election. The team is also responsible for maintaining and strengthening the Embassy’s relationship with its consular district (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and DC) and with US and UK universities.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the political team as it follows and reports on political developments leading to the presidential election.
- Assist in following key developments in Congress and the Administration.
- Track and analyse public opinion polls.
- Research best practice programmes, key contacts and events in the Consular District.
- Opportunities to attend and report on external briefings, think tank events and congressional hearings possible.
- Provide capacity for the Foreign & Security Policy Intern, assisting with projects where necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be a junior or a senior in an undergraduate program, or enrolled in a graduate program by the start date of your internship (least 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework completed). Since this is an unpaid internship, students receiving college credit in exchange for their internships is required.
- Students majoring in International Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Diplomacy, Political Science or a relevant degree.
- Strong organizational, writing, and computer-related skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is essential.
- Willing to support all members of the team as required.
- Knowledge of UK and/or EU politics would be helpful, but not critical.
Under US State requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders, A or J1 Visa holders with valid Work Authorization Documents. If you hold a Visa other than an A or J1 Visa you are not eligible to work at the Embassy. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance.
