The United Kingdom Mission to the UN & WTO in Geneva (UKMis) represents the interests and policies of the UK at many international organisations. We are currently looking for a temporary local member of staff B3 (L) Delegation Coordinator for the Economic Section to provide maternity cover for a period of one year from late April 2020 - until 30 April 2021.

The successful jobholder will provide administrative support, and limited policy support, to the Trade and Economic team. This is a varied and multi-faceted role in a fast-paced environment. We require a highly organised individual who is excellent at coordinating a large team, and can take responsibility for planning logistics at high-level events. The successful candidate will be a strong team player and self-starter who, as well as maintaining grids and tracking systems, also needs to be able to grasp policy developments on trade and economic issues. They will be responsible for a range of administrative, organisational and logistical tasks, policy work and event planning, including supporting policy leads with tracking developments across a range of policy dossiers, and facilitating team coordination and synthesis on a range of cross-cutting issues. They will manage the Section’s budget.

This person will work on several logistical issues, including travel plans, accommodation, payments and accreditation planning for the team’s work at both the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos and the next WTO Ministerial Conference in Kazakhstan, and help manage all events organised by the Section in Geneva. They will maintain a calendar tracking the wide variety of meetings and engagements across the economic spectrum in Geneva including at the WTO, WIPO, ITU and UNCTAD. They will oversee the Section’s internal communications and budget, and provide wider administrative support for the Section, including drafting of statements as necessary and monitor and report crosscutting trade and protectionism trends to leads in the Mission and London. The role is primarily office-based and administrative in nature, but there will be possibilities for discrete policy responsibility depending on the Section’s workloads and priorities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will support the UK’s Permanent Representative and Deputy Permanent Representative to the WTO with high-level meetings including the General Council, where you will commission and coordinate briefing, track the issues on the agenda, and promptly report on the meetings. You will lead on the regular weekly reporting back to London of the Section’s work;
  • You will play a leading role in organising the UK presence at both the WTO’s upcoming Ministerial Conference in Kazakhstan in June 2020 and the WEF’s annual meeting in Davos in January 2021, leading on issues including accreditation, accommodation, financial tracking and payments, and broader logistics. You will be involved in the preparation of all events held by the Section, and input to the planning of some visits to Geneva by UK Ministers or senior officials, working with the UK Mission’s visits team and the relevant policy officers;
  • You will maintain and deploy a grid of all significant meetings in the economic agencies, ensuring that the UK is properly represented and that the necessary briefing is commissioned, and help track the submission of WTO notifications across all policy areas;
  • You will support the Economic Section with ad hoc admin tasks and tracking policy developments on trade and economic issues. You will cover and report concisely on meetings in International Organisations across Geneva when required, and may have the opportunity to be policy lead on discrete policy areas when the opportunity arises;
  • You will also develop a broader, strategic view of international events outside Geneva, across the economic, trade and innovation space, where these overlap with our interests here or the work of the Geneva agencies;
  • You will be responsible for overseeing the team’s budget, ensuring proper forecasting and reporting of the Section’s spend.
  • You will maintain the Section’s contact database and oversee the many official visitors to Geneva, ensuring that they are appropriately accredited and have the necessary passes. You will ensure that incoming communications are allocated to the relevant policy lead
