Main purpose of job: 

British High Commissioner’s Residence is looking for a talented and passionate Junior Butler, who is prepared and holds willingness to deliver exceptional and uninterrupted service whilst being part of the Residence team. You will be part of 5-person team on regular days which might increase during events. 

You are expected to have a real pride for what you do, with the ability to build rapport with the service receivers (High Commissioner and his/her family, Residence guests) and the fellow team members.  

We expect a warm and welcoming personality, with standards of professionalism. You will be part of the Residence team, responsible for serving all meals during private and official gatherings, indoors/outdoors, extend sit down pre-plated service, silver service, buffet setup, clearance, setup, dismantling setup, housekeeping, luggage handling, aesthetic setting etc. 

Roles and responsibilities: 25%

  • Implement the necessary changes to ensure operational and service compliance.
  • Identify operational weakness and opportunities for betterment in the quality of products and services.
  • Take rounds carrying an eye for detail to identify general mechanical/engineering related glitch. Report further to the Butler/Residence Manager.
  • Conduct bi-annual inventory of cellar, crockery, cutlery, glassware, silverware, artwork, furniture etc. in co-operation with the Butler.
  • Spot check event room, guest room for setup.

Roles and responsibilities: 30%

  • Setting up, providing service and clearance during cocktail events, tea, breakfast, lunch, dinner, bar service in collaboration with the Butler.
  • Perform closing duties after the event /meal is over.
  • Washing, cleaning all tableware etc.
  • Keep silver and other items (door handles, lamp stands etc.) polished and clean.
  • Prepare for and support the delivery of events at the Residence and outside events in Official capacity.

Roles and responsibilities: 15%

  • Provide appropriate domestic support to the High Commissioner as the Residence’s Junior – Butler

Roles and responsibilities: 30%

  • Greet and bid farewell to High Commissioner/family/guests on daily arrival and departure, whilst liasoning with Residence gate security.
  • Extending assistance to Housekeeper to maintain appearance and cleanliness in the public areas whlist performing multi-tasking during back to back room turn around.
  • Play part in keeping clean and fit for purpose the interior of the house and the immediate areas outside it.
  • Extend assistance to Chef in performing multi-tasking during whole day events.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

  • Ordering with the Butler/Housekeeper for everyday essentials.
  • Prepare beverage consumption post completion of every event in collocation with the Butler.

Language requirements: 

Language:  English 

Level of language required:  Spoken – Fluent, Written – Good

Ability to communicate in Sinhala and Tamil would be an added advantage.

Working Hours 

  • Working week of 48 hours over 5 days with a 1 hour lunch break.
  • Willing and able to work flexible working hours according to events and guests at the Residence.
  • Be punctual and make good use of all working hours.
  • Candidate must be able to cope with periods of high pressure and may have to work official holidays and weekends. Organisation pays O.T. for official duty additional hours.

Essential on arrival: 

  • 2 years of experience in 4 or 5 star hotels, in F&B and Housekeeping

OR

  • 2 years of experience in reputed establishments, as a Butler
  • Hotel School Certificate in F&B and Housekeeping Departments
  • Diploma in Hospitality Management is an added qualification
  • Experience in service related aspects
  • Speech clarity and good communication
  • Attention to detail
  • Skills in F&B and Housekeeping (both public area and rooms)
  • Should be proactive in performing duties and helping others
  • Be an active team player with a proven ability to work using own initiative
  • Should have an enthusiastic attitude and willingness to deliver a professional service
  • Be friendly and helpful and able to remain calmness under challenging circumstances
  • Being courteous and supportive
  • Can do attitude
  • Willing to work long hours as and when requested 

Desirable: 

  • Intermediate knowledge on spirits, wine, beer & all beverages
  • Intermediate knowledge of food
  • Intermediate knowledge and skills in housekeeping
  • Intermediate Knowledge of using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook (email)

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, starting salary will be LKR 46,492 + EPF 12% + ETF 3% per month per month. The current equivalent USD salary paid (at fixed corporate exchange rate from March 2022) is USD 230.00 per month. Other benefits include 13 month’s salary (pro-rated) and medical insurance coverage.

'Please note that the current salaries are being dollarized and processed in USD (pegged to a fixed corporate exchange rate from March 2022) to provide cushion against the current external market conditions. This is a temporary measure and is subject to review at regular intervals. The payroll will revert to local currency processing once the external market conditions are normalised.
