Main purpose of job

The British Embassy’s Information Technology Team (ITT) is looking for a highly motivated and proactive IT Specialist to join their team.  The Information Technology Team is responsible for all IT systems for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office division of the Embassy and Consulates throughout the US.


Roles and responsibilities 

1. IT Administration, User Support, Change and Security

• Act as point of contact for users on IT (including PAGs) and be responsible for advice on

use of systems.

• Act as point of contact for ICT moves and changes at post.

2. Hardware

• Install and maintain hardware/peripherals and support cabling, switches, including backbone throughout the building.

• Manage a small pool of ‘hot’ spares of desktops and laptops as well as server spares (FRU

kits) and order replacement spares to replenish those used to resolve a fault using the

Incident Management Process.

• Rebuild desktops and laptops when required as instructed by the Help Desk

• Administer stand-alone machines and dirty network by maintaining accurate user account

records, assuring each individual users has a passworded account, assuring all devices have

up to date anti-virus and software licences.

3. Telephony and Networking

• Install and maintain telephony hardware/peripherals and support cabling, switches, including backbone throughout the building.

• Replace faulty telephone handsets using spares from on-site spares holding and using

Incident Process to request replacements.

• Work with UK based service desk to perform basic checks on equipment located on site

e.g. power, cabling, warning lamp status.

4. Other IT Systems

• Desk-side application support

• Desk-side user support / training / hand-holding

• Television Network - Install and maintain hardware/peripherals and support cabling, switches, including backbone throughout the building.

• SmartPhone configuration / assignments

• Internet connections & configurations

• hardware moves & changes

• anti-virus management

• Standalone laptops / Desktops

• Standalone printers & scanners

• Mobile Phones

• Fax machines

• Crisis Equipment Management

• Video Conferencing

  • Excellent Computer and Networking Skills – in particular very good knowledge of Networks (Switches/Patching – including Backbone /Troubleshooting)
  • Educational Proof of the above such as a Bachelors Degree in IT
  • Proficiency in Office 365 including MS Teams
  • Telephony Networks experience

Working patterns

Hours are flexible but with accordance with the rest of the Team as we need to ensure cover from 7.30am to 5.30pm. You are expected to come to office full time (5 times a week).
