View Vacancy - Communications and Events Officer (ISL21.510)
The British Embassy in Reykjavik is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Communications and Events Officer.
Working as part of a small team, the successful candidate will help the Embassy advance wider UK interests and priorities by promoting the UK. This includes building upon and fostering the many existing strong links between the UK and Iceland.
This role is crucial in maintaining the Icelandic perception of the Embassy as a reliable, informative and accurate source of information. This is to be achieved through both traditional and social media, as well as through set events or campaigns.
Main roles and responsibilities:
- Day to day management of the Embassy’s social media accounts and website. Ensuring that the Embassy’s messaging and interactions on the various platforms are accurate, timely, targeted and effective.
- Monitoring Icelandic traditional and social media to identify cultural, social, business or academic opportunities for the Embassy to engage with to further our priorities. To work with the rest of the Embassy team to develop any opportunities identified.
- To maintain a wide network of press, radio and TV media contacts to facilitate the Embassy in arranging interviews, op-eds, articles and responses to engage the wider Icelandic population on the bilateral relationship and our aims.
- To lead on organising Embassy events, projects and major campaigns (e.g. talks, receptions or exhibitions) . This includes planning, budgeting, monitoring and ensuring impactful delivery in line with the overall objectives. This will require adhering to set rules (e.g. financial), but showing creativity and innovation to achieve good results.
- To lead on the various university scholarship schemes the Embassy is involved with to ensure the impartial selection of credible scholars. This will include building and maintaining good relations with the sponsors, universities and scholarship alumni network.
- To work with the British Council, Visit Britain and Universities UK among others to help promote their campaigns and messaging in Iceland.
In addition to the above, the successful candidate will be expected to provide support to colleagues to help achieve wider Embassy objectives e.g. helping out during visits by UK officials and Ministers, provide leave cover for the Political Officer, contributing to crisis team preparations and helping during any major crisis involving UK nationals.

- A good understanding of Iceland’s media, cultural and academic scene
No deductions are made from employees’ salaries, which include elements in respect of all required employer and employee contributions. Payment of all taxes and deductions are each employee’s responsibility.
The British Embassy offers a change-oriented, diverse and international environment with a strong focus on learning and development. Annual leave entitlement is 24 days rising to 30 days depending on length of service. The Embassy also observes an additional 14 local and UK public holidays.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.
