Main purpose of job

This role will assist in delivering foreign direct investment (FDI) to the UK from British Columbia (BC) and also provide support to British companies exporting goods and services to Canada. 70% of role is FDI-related work and 30% Trade/Exports work.




Roles and responsibilities


•           Conduct market research of industry and businesses for potential FDI across British Columbia


•           Monitor business trends and developments across BC in a range of sectors


•           Identify and contact potential and existing inward investors


•           Coordinate business development visits and programmes for the Investment Officer


•           Prepare meeting briefs


•           Assist with event coordination as required including visits programmes, trade missions or bespoke events for Canadian/UK companies or external business contacts.


•           Represent DIT at networking events


•           Monitor BC public events and conferences pertinent to FDI work


•           Maintain and manage internal databases


•           Set up trade programs, if requested, for UK companies visiting BC


•           Complete ad hoc research for UK companies seeking to export to BC


•           Source export opportunities that will lead to export business for UK companies


•           Perform office administration tasks and other ad hoc duties as required


•           Out of office hours work may be required




  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • A minimum of two years relevant work experience
  • Proven research skills
  • Knowledge of the business environment in Canada and a good understanding of Canada-UK commercial relations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to professionally communicate with senior level representatives from the public and private sectors
  • Attention to detail and good follow-up discipline
  • Time management and the ability to prioritize, effectively manage, and execute multiple and competing tasks under tight deadlines
  • Proactive nature and the ability to work under limited day-to-day supervision
  • Ability to work well independently as well as a part of a larger team
  • Positive team player
  • Computer literacy with specific knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
