The British Embassy in Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. At the moment, we are seeking to recruit a Consular Policy Officer. As a Consular Policy Officer in the Europe network, you will be a key member of a cross-Embassy team working on the UK’s exit from the European Union. As part of the team, you will engage with local authorities to track and understand the implementation of UK/EU Citizens’ Rights agreements. You will also help ensure that timely and accurate information is available for British Nationals, including website content, and you will support pro-active outreach to British Nationals. 

You will be based in Berlin but your job will have a regional role, which will require some travel to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

Specifically, as an integral part of the Embassy Team, you will:

  • Follow and understand host-country and regional implementation of citizens’ rights agreements as part of the UK leaving the EU, and other issues relevant to British Nationals resident or visiting your countries of responsibility.
  • Use your understanding of host-country and regional implementation to input into communications and information for British Nationals, including delivery through a range of digital resources and outreach events. You will also use this understanding to produce internal analysis and policy advice.  
  • Travel extensively within your region to develop an effective network at a local authority and, where necessary, central government level, and generate insights and awareness.
  • Work and co-ordinate closely with other Embassy teams, supporting wider Mission and British Government objectives, as well as co-ordinate with Consular Regional Operations Managers (CROM) and the Consular Regional Director (CRD).
  • Develop close collaborative relationships with other Government Department representatives e.g. Department for Exiting the EU (DEXEU), Department of Works and Pensions (DWP), Department of Health (DoH), HM Passport Office and other stakeholders. 
  • Fluent English and German (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 Level for CEFR framework*)
  • Excellent communication, information management and presentation skills: written and oral, including use of digital media

 

  • Knowledge of local governmental structures and decision-making (local and central level)
  • Previous experience or awareness of British and local country public sector policy development
  • Legal and EU knowledge, experience and understanding
  • Knowledge of British consular strategy outcomes and strategy is desirable

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours per week, for an initial contract period of 18 months, which may be extended by mutual agreement.

The British Embassy in Berlin has a strong ethos of Learning and Development, including our Learning and Development Week.
