Main purpose of job: 

The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) works with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets and encourage the best overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice. 

You will act as a regional specialist for the English Midlands (branded as the ‘Midlands Engine’) with a focus on promoting the region’s advanced engineering and manufacturing (AEM) sector and associated automotive and technology sub- sectors. This role is linked to the UK government’s agenda to increase trade and investment support in the UK regions.  You will be primarily responsible for helping Midlands Engine companies to win business in India. You will work closely with the DIT Midlands Trade Team, sector teams, local  trade partners in the Midlands, and the East and West Midlands International Trade Teams to achieve this. Whilst the role is based in Mumbai within the British Deputy High Commission you will have a national remit and will need to be mobile across India to respond to where we see strong busienss opportunities in the sector for the Midlands Engine. 

The English Midlands has a working population of over 4m, over 500,000 of whom are involved in manufacturing and engineering.  It includes the cities of Birmingham, Nottingham, Coventry and Leicester. The region provides 20% of the manufacturing output of the UK. It is home to the largest cluster of rail manufacturers in Europe and the world’s second largest jet engine manufacturer (Rolls-Royce). Every major car manufacturer is represented in the Midlands, including Toyota, Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover, with strong supply chain capability and a significant presence of Motorsports around Silverstone. Alongside global brands such as JCB, Bombardier and Walgreen Boots range of companies specialise in several sectors from rail, mechanical engineering to battery technology and medical devices. 

DIT South Asia is one of the nine DIT overseas regions, led by Allen Gemmell, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for South Asia who is based in Mumbai. DIT South Asia also includes Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal. You will be part of the DIT India Trade team. 

Roles and Responsibilities: 

Export campaign development and delivery, increasing demand for Midlands Engine sector specific goods and services in market (65%)

  • Develop and deliver targeted campaigns to increase Midlands Engine exports to India and the wider South Asia region.
  • Organise and deliver Midlands Engine trade missions, webinars, and in-market events, connecting businesses with senior stakeholders in India and the South Asia region. While the primary focus will be AEM, you will also be required to support other priority sectors and wider Midlands strategic priorities, such as the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
  • Support the planning of inward market roadshows to the Midlands Engine region and ‘Meet the Buyer’ events, recruiting businesses to participate and helping to raise the awareness of opportunities in the region. 
  • Identifying and map business opportunities and potential gaps in the India market that match the offer of UK companies in the Midlands Engine Region.
  • Build a pipeline of credible cross-sector export opportunities for Midlands Engine companies who are ready to export to India.

Building awareness of Midlands Engine capability (30%)

  • Work with UK and Indian strategic partners, including the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), to demonstrate the excellence of UK businesses based in the Midlands Engine Region
  • Work in partnership with DIT sector teams in India to build a network of contacts in priority sectors for the Midlands Engine region.
  • Building capacity in the India network to ensure relevant Midlands Engine sector specialities are presented as options to potential Indian importers.  
  • Ensure Midlands Engine strategic and sector priorities are included in UK trade campaigns in India.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationship with Midlands Engine Trade Team, regional sector specialists, DIT Sector colleagues and specialists, and regional partners.
  • Collaborate with the Midlands Engine Investment Champions, where appropriate.

 Reporting and Analysis (5%)

  • Provide a monthly update on activity to ensure alignment with local ambitions and targeted local support. 
  • Produce bespoke reporting and analysis on sector specific opportunities.
  • Feed into the quarterly steering group for the overseas champions programme.
  • Contribute to wider British High Commission reporting.

Essential on arrival:     

  • A deep knowledge of the automotive, advanced manufacturing and engineering sector in India along with a substantial network of high-level contacts.   
  • Minimum 6 years’ business development/commercial experience, with a strong functional knowledge of the Indian business environment.
  • Experience of developing relationships and building influence with multiple stakeholders at a senior level in the public and private sector. 
  • Highly computer literate with the ability to use a range of data management systems.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and spoken.
  • Ability to draft succinct reports and provide briefing for generalist and specialist audiences, often to very tight deadlines.  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong team player who can work on their own initiative and across virtual teams. 
  • Ability to manage allocated budget and provide timely returns.

Desirable:    

  • Experience of working in trade/export promotion.
  • Key Account management experience.
  • Knowledge of the key sectors in other South Asia markets
  • Knowledge of key sector capabilities in the Midlands Engine region.
  • Previous experience of working with the UK Government and understanding of Midlands Engine political and economic landscape and/or experience of working with Midlands Engine local partners.
