This is a fixed term position for a period of two years with a possibility of renewal.

Main purpose of job: 

The Trade Team leads on the UK-Pakistan bilateral trade relationship, providing analysis, direction and reporting, as well as engaging with key stakeholders in business, the UK government and the Federal and Provincial Government of Pakistan. The job holder will need to be flexible in responding to changes in scope and priorities of the trade policy team. 

As a key member of the British Deputy High Commission’s Trade Team you will help deliver progress in the UK-Pakistan bilateral trade relationship. The focus will be on supporting UK exporters to dramatically grow the volume of trade. This will likely be managing a team that focuses on healthcare, education, and other high value trade sectors. This will be through developing a pipeline of opportunities for UK businesses and by supporting UK companies to translate these opportunities into export deals and partnerships/collaborations. 

This will also include working across the UK Government’s network in Pakistan to support the removal of market access barriers in key sectors; providing analysis and reporting on key developments that inform policy development. 

Experience and knowledge of trade promotion and trade policy are desired, as well as managing a team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead on specific sector work-streams. This work will require you to collaborate with colleagues across the UK Government’s Pakistan Network, colleagues in London, the Department for International Trade hub in Dubai, and businesses in order to promote UK services and partnerships.
  • Provide analysis and reporting that support the development of the overarching bilateral trade policy relationship, using the expertise you develop of the specific sectors, as well as the insights of Pakistan policy making in these sectors, to: support the evolution and delivery of the bilateral trade policy relationship with country, including identifying market access barriers; and identifying opportunities to progress wider UK objectives by effectively linking your work with other parts of the UK Pakistan Network.
  • Collaborative approach:  Confidence to work with a high degree of independence and able to reach out to economic, political and policy departments internally or liaise with a range of senior figures in industry in the Sindh government.  Establish working level contacts in the Ministries of Finance, Commerce, Health and Education in Islamabad. Develop and deliver engagement strategies to progress issues with Government of Pakistan; identify opportunities to progress wider UK objectives by effectively linking your work with other parts of the UK Pakistan Network.
  • Support junior colleagues in promoting UK Education and Healthcare services and partnerships, as well as opportunities for Agri-tech, Infrastructure and Renewables.
  • Relationship management: Work well with trade bodies, high profile businesses in the UK and Pakistan, and contacts in the Federal and Provincial Government.
  • Support visitors from the British High Commission, the British Deputy High Commission, and other trade delegations.
  • Support the Trade Director, Deputy Director, regional Sector leads and HMTC on trade strategy, briefings and business development visits.
  • Promote UK's technical credentials to foster collaboration within the priority sectors.
  • Know the Pakistani business environment and stay up-to-date about market developments

Essential:

  • Candidate should have 5-7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience in engaging with senior business/ government stakeholders.

  • Excellent ability to deliver on tight deadlines and turn around requests efficiently.
  • Candidate should be proactive, a self-starter and have the ability to adapt to change.

Desirable:  

  • Experience in interacting with a variety of stakeholders and working in a multi-cultural environment
  • A strong understanding of Government of Pakistan’s policy making structures/environment
  • Masters’ degree in Economics/ Business Studies or Management/ Trade policy.

For other than BHC candidates, Basic Salary will be ­­­­­­PKR 246,648.
