Main purpose of job:

The job holder will be Invest Northern Ireland’s (Invest NI) key representative for the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The primary focus of the position will be trade development and helping Northern Ireland companies across all business sectors to export to this region. In addition, the position will lead on investment and education promotion activities for Northern Ireland. He / She will be required to forge effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and businesses at senior level to promote Northern Ireland and secure trade and investment wins.  

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify relevant business opportunities for Northern Ireland companies through market intelligence, connections and research and promote the Northern Ireland capability to key decision makers.
  • Develop strong C-level relationships with targeted companies, stakeholders and influencers in the region and enable Northern Ireland companies to engage with them.
  • Develop a specific strategy in agreed markets to seek opportunities for potential inward investment and the promotion of Northern Ireland Education.
  • Build strong relationships with British Diplomatic posts and Business Groups, DIT, DfID and the British Council and collaborate where appropriate with the other devolved administrations; the Irish Embassy and Enterprise Ireland staff.
  • Support Northern Ireland companies interested in the region by providing information they require to make informed business decisions by handling market research and assessment enquiries, conducting visits and setting up appointments and writing appropriate reports.
  • Work in partnership with in-market advisers (as required) to oversee and manage support for company visits, trade missions, events and exhibitions.
  • Manage VIP (including Ministerial delegations) visit programme and all necessary logistics and protocols.
  • Develop a market strategy for the region to promote Northern Ireland capability and which contributes to the overall goals of the India, Middle East & Africa (IMEA) territory.
  • Engage effectively with colleagues and stakeholders based in Northern Ireland to provide market and sector briefings and to ensure that activity in the market aligns with corporate plans.
  • Develop network of Northern Ireland ex-pats living / working in region and work with Northern Irish Connections to lever economic returns to Northern Ireland.
  • Manage relevant information sources and maintain accurate recording of customer and stakeholder information on Invest NI’s CRM and management systems.
  • Work in partnership with the IMEA PR and Communications Manager and the relevant Head office teams to contribute to and develop a promotion strategy for the region in order to increase awareness of Northern Ireland’s offering, including active use of social media, input to the design / preparation of promotional and advertorial materials.    



Resources managed:

Manage a part–time Trade & Investment Officer.

Prepare an annual budget for the region and manage expenditure in line with the necessary corporate governance guidelines.

  • A significant track record in Business Development, including managing and undertaking market research, analysing market data, preparing reports and presenting information clients and senior management.
  • A sound business knowledge of Sub-Saharan Africa (primarily South Africa) and the business opportunities across sectors, being aware of specific issues relating to doing business in the region.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships at senior levels with excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with business and government contacts and colleagues in Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK.
  • Exceptional organisational, IT and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work at pace and independently as a part a small global team; and prioritise, managing a potentially heavy workload while continuing to support existing business relationships in-market
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland, particularly an understanding of its key sectors and economic drivers

The British High Commission pays in full for the Key Care Plus option on Discovery Health for staff including spouses/partners and dependants.

Once you have successfully completed your probation the British High Commission will contribute 9 % of your monthly salary to a Provident Fund.
