The British Embassy in Copenhagen is part of a world-wide network, representing British political & economic and consular interests overseas.

A full-time position as Executive Officer to the Defence Attaché has become available in the Defence section.

The main purpose of the job is to support the Defence Attaché by; providing administrative support in order to influence Danish defence, plan and manage activities & events that enhance the Defence section’s network; keep the Defence Attaché informed of what may become Danish defence issues relevant to the UK; encourage Denmark to support UK interests and UK views on Defence. Support Defence engagement, to build robust relationships in order to enhance interoperability with Danish Defence and to strengthen the UK’s position as one of the world’s leading soft powers.

Main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • General administration of the day to day running of the Defence Section including information management, managing the Defence Section Calendar and Forecast of Events, MS Outlook / Teams and distribution of Military publications.

  • Influence Defence contacts by maintenance and enhancement of Defence section’s network, at all levels, through personal communication. The ability to contact the right person in any Defence or military situation that may arise.

  • Defence engagement; advising the Defence Attaché to identify areas where strategic engagement is required, generating the opportunities for the right players to meet, and influencing the agenda and policy outcomes, in support of Embassy and Defence Section objectives.

  • Horizon Scanning for continuous updates on Danish Defence and Security matters and updating of relevant databases.

  • Lead on the planning of Defence events, ceremonies and visits, being the first point of contact when such events are being developed (including military funerals). Plan, design, prioritise and coordinate programmes and requirements for official Defence visitors.

  • Lead for all Commonwealth War Graves Commission sites, Liberation commemorations and relevant Danish / UK Veterans’ memorials.

  • Deputise for the Assistant Defence Attaché (ADA) when required and obtain Diplomatic Clearance for visiting UK military units (Air, Land & Sea) when necessary.

  • Provide redundancy for the Defence Attaché and ADA when absent / on leave where appropriate.  

  • Ability to work well within a small team and within the wider Embassy team.

  • Honesty and Integrity.

  • Flexibility and excellent organisational and time management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain a Danish network.

  • Event management skills.

  • Fluency in Danish and English (both verbally and written, C1 level*).

  • Good Information Management / IT / Social Media skills.

  • Clean Driving License.


  • Knowledge of the UK Armed Forces and Danish Defence.

  • Knowledge & experience of the UK & UK Culture.

This is a full-time permanent contract of 35 hours net per week.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Denmark in order to apply.
