Scottish Development International (SDI) www.sdi.co.uk is funded by the Scottish Government to develop strategic relationships and business partnerships between Scotland and the rest of the world. We promote the export trade of Scottish companies across the world and assist overseas investors to locate in Scotland. We have a team of colleagues in Scotland within Scotland’s enterprise agencies - Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise and a network of partners, from our universities to industry bodies to contribute to our success.

We are a partner of the Department of International Trade and operate collaboratively across the globe. The position will be based in the British Embassy in Berlin, alongside the Scottish Government Hub; and in close cooperation with the Scottish Development International office based in Dusseldorf.

This is an exciting and demanding field sales position based in Berlin with a key focus of the role in identifying opportunities for Scotland's energy supply chain companies in Germany. The role involves increasing and widening the on-the-ground support available to Scottish companies operating in energy - mainly renewable energy and low carbon technology sectors, who have the ambition, capacity, and capability to export their products and / or services to Germany.

Roles and responsibilities:

Trade Development

  • Identify key Buyers operating in the energy sector and take a strategic account management role, understanding their procurement and supply chain requirements, and discuss potential opportunities for Scottish companies.
  • Develop and maintain close cooperation with colleagues from the Inward investment team and the Scottish Government hub in order to build platforms for collaborative or strategic engagement between Scotland and Germany on areas such as low carbon hydrogen.
  • Identify and attend sector-specific trade shows, exhibitions and conferences in the market/region to promote Scotland's proposition in energy; expand your network of contacts; and identify opportunities for Scottish companies.
  • Gather market intelligence and scope/explore new opportunities for Scottish energy companies. Report on trends to SDI sector teams, companies, and partners as appropriate.

Trade Promotion

  • Deliver webinars and use social media to highlight key market opportunities for Scottish energy companies.
  • Take a creative approach to trade development work and look for innovative ways to stimulate demand for Scottish energy goods and services in your market/region.
  • Work with colleagues in Scotland to deliver visit programs, trade missions, and learning journeys for Scottish energy companies and facilitate introductions with key stakeholders in Germany.

Trade Support

  • Work as part of a wider account team to provide trade advice and guidance to companies in the Scottish energy supply chain looking to access market opportunities in Germany.
  • Support Scottish companies with market entry and growth strategies and develop a deep understanding of routes to market, business environment and regulatory framework.
  • Update CRM with details of all company support provided and how it has helped to deliver against SDI's objectives. Update account team members on the impact of any support provided.
  • Prepare Monthly Report on outcomes for sharing with SDI and partners.
  • Fluency in English and German (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • University degree in Business or Engineering or related discipline;
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and/or business consulting roles ideally in the energy sector;
  • Experience and understanding of the German energy market in particular, specifically as it relates to project development, origination, supply chain development in the fields of Offshore wind and Hydrogen;
  • Proven collaboration and facilitation skills with senior leaders and cross-functional teams;
  • Strong commercial background, extensive experience in project development with a demonstrated ability to identify and originate business opportunities;
  • Ability to develop strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Strong team approach with the ability to work with different teams in the organisation;
  • Able to work in a dynamic sales environment under pressure and to tight deadlines;
  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative.

This is a full-time, temporary position of five working days 37.5 hours per week to cover for a maternity leave. We expect the position to be available for 12 months; however the period could be longer or shorter depending on the current job holder's maternity leave dates.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Germany are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.
