The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a Deputy Head for the Department for International Trade (DIT) Bucharest Team.

DIT is the UK Government organisation that helps UK-based companies to succeed in Romania and other international markets. DIT also assists overseas companies to bring high-quality investment to the UK’s economy.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Support the Head of DIT Romania in leading the team, in the decision-making process and on budgets in order to ensure delivery of the Central Europe Network (CEN) regional DIT Business Plan and implementation of the UK Government’s strategy and approach for growth and prosperity. CEN comprises 11 markets: Austria, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia;
  • Leading on the UK overseas promotion programme “GREAT” for DIT Romania, involving various trade and public relation activities and events;
  • Develop relations with key business and institutional stakeholders in Romania and in the UK with a core focus on building a strong pipeline of commercial wins for British business; and maximising the Bucharest team’s contribution to delivery of an ambitious CEN regional business win target;
  • Identify and develop successful relationships with existing and potential investors to the UK, promoting the UK as a key partner for globalisation and ensuring that investment leads are fed through to DIT’s outsourced investment partner (AT Kearney);
  • Develop, communicate and drive a regional strategy for delivering value wins in the priority sectors, ensuring buy-in and support from regional colleagues; a balance between promotional activities and events and key relationship management in-country;
  • Build a strong, interactive and collaborative partnership between DIT Bucharest, the British Romanian Chamber of Commerce and OBNI (Overseas Business Network Initiative), ensuring the best possible service and support for British business and the success of all three contributors;
  • Support the Head of DIT Bucharest to contribute to regional efforts to represent the interests and maintaining the reputation of the CEN with senior colleagues at DIT Headquarters and other UK government stakeholders in the UK, helping to ensure continued priority, support and resources for the region;
  • Support in managing DIT budget at local level;
  • Line management responsibilities for senior and junior trade advisers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and fluency in English and Romanian, both verbal and written, with excellent writing and communication skills;
  • At least 5 years of commercial activity, management experience would be an advantage;
  • A college / university level degree in a relevant area or equivalent experience is preferred;
  • Strategic commercial and economic awareness;
  • Excellent team leadership skills and a record of delivering results; ability to bring diverse teams together to work toward common goals;
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with customers and stakeholders;
  • An innovative attitude especially towards customer service and performance management;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong IT computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office and Internet;
  • Experience with Oracle systems and databases preferred.

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) for one year, with the possibility to be extended. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 21 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys an average of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.

The salary is RON 8,362 gross per month. In addition, staff receive meal tickets, a thirteenth salary on a pro rata basis and a monthly subscription to a medical centre. An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, which may include training outside Romania.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 30 days.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy is subject to terms and conditions service according to Romanian employment law.

The start date for the position is 1 October 2016 (this may be negotiable for the right candidate).
