Main purpose of job:


The advertised post is for a Trade & Investment Associate (TIA) – Financial & Professional Services, based out of the British Consulate-General in Atlanta. The TIA will report to the Deputy Sector Head for FPBS in Atlanta and will specifically seek to identify and attract foreign direct investment into the UK from prospects across the financial services sector, covering financial technology, asset management, insurance and back office operations. These prospects will be new companies, as well as large companies with existing UK operations who seek expansion. The candidate will also help assist high growth UK companies enter the US market.      

The successful candidate will engage with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders. S/he will be responsible for working with clients and delivering DIT initiatives across the Southeast US, with an emphasis on the key metro economies of Atlanta, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Orlando and South Florida.

The appointee will also help to support the management of DIT relationships with strategic accounts across the aforementioned industries and drive regional activity in support of major campaigns (e.g. the GREAT Campaign).


Roles and responsibilities:

 

The successful candidate will be expected to achieve the following:


    • Proactively identify and make initial contacts with Southeast US FPBS companies that may be interested in establishing or expanding operations in the UK. Organize visit programs and schedule company meetings for the FPBS Trade & Investment Officer. Attend meetings when appropriate and assist in providing support and managing direct relationships.

    • Attend general networking events and conferences run by stakeholders, partners and multipliers across the region to build local relationships, generate leads and pass on intelligence to the wider Southeast DIT team; routinely monitor regular and social media to source new business opportunities.

    • Conduct research and compile reports on industry developments, best routes to market and potential US business partners for UK companies operating in the financial & professional services sector that are looking to enter the US market. Develop, maintain, and disseminate knowledge of developments, trends, and opportunities in financial & professional services in both the US and the UK. Develop knowledge of developments and trends in FPBS in the UK and US.

    • Provide planning and administrative / logistical support to enable the implementation of high impact, targeted marketing programs and events in conjunction with stakeholder partners (including high level dinners, seminars etc.) to build DIT brand awareness and promote the UK.

    • Maintain client relationship management records, lists of key industry contacts and other data. Assist with initiatives such as trade missions, seminars, webinars, receptions and other events to promote DIT-US’ work in the financial & professional services sector. Provide event management and logistical support when necessary.

    • Provide administrative support to Trade & Investment Officer and to the wider DIT South East team as and when required.

    • Work with Miami and Atlanta-based colleagues to assist with the logistics and execution of commercially-focused VIP and Ministerial visits. Develop meeting programs and briefing materials as appropriate.

    • Undertake occasional travel in the U.S. and approximately one visit to the UK each year.

        • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field
        • 1-3 years professional experience in international business, technology or other related field
        • Proactive, self-starting approach to work with the ability to deliver effectively under limited day-to-day supervision in a deadline-sensitive, fast-paced environment.
        • Strong ability to problem solve, organize, prioritize and manage tasks.
        • Ability to effectively and credibly deal with companies/organizations at a senior level through all forms of communication and a proven track record of fostering business relationships.
        • Excellent research and report writing skills – with an ability to identify relevant information and provide clear, concise summaries.
        • Strong and enthusiastic networking skills, and the ability to attend early morning and evening events.
        • Committed team player, with the ability to build strong connections both within and outside of the Department for International Trade.
        • Understanding and knowledge of the business environments in the UK and US.
        • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is essential; familiarity with data management systems is desirable.
        • Valid driver’s license and passport; the ability to attend official functions outside of office hours; and the ability to undertake domestic and international air travel, including overnight stays.
