The British Embassy in Amman is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for the position of Pro Consul, Grade – A2 (L).

 

Purpose of the job:

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver a professional and efficient consular service to British Nationals in Jordan. The main purpose of the role is to ensure delivery of professional and high quality services in line with FCO guidance.

The position will involve developing and maintaining contacts with local authorities and other relevant stakeholders in the community and provision of notarial and documentary services. The successful candidate will act as the first point of contact for consular customers, often working independently.

 

Main Responsibilities:

Assistance:

  • Provide accurate advice and assistance to Distressed British Nationals (DBNs) and their families including in the event of arrest/detention or hospitalisation.
  • Possible 'out of hours' requirement in an emergency.

Counter and Notarial Services:

  • Administering the on-line consular appointment system.
  • Providing a range of counter services including notarial work and emergency travel documents.
  • Responding to customer enquiries.

Communications and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Assist with the delivery of prevention and communication campaigns, including briefing for stakeholders at outreach events.
  • Actively seek out and manage partnerships with local authorities and the wider community.

General:

  • Play a constructive role in the wider operation of the Embassy.
  • Participate in crisis planning and response.

Key Competencies and Required Skills:

  • Making Effective Decisions - Effectiveness in being objective; using sound judgement, evidence and knowledge to provide accurate, expert and professional advice.
  • Collaborating and Partnering - People skilled in this area create and maintain positive, professional and trusting working relationships with a wide range of people within and outside the Civil Service to help get business done.
  • Delivering at Pace - Delivering timely performance with energy and taking responsibility and accountability for quality outcomes.
  • Managing a Quality Service - Effectiveness in this area is about being organised to deliver service objectives and striving to improve the quality of service, taking account of diverse customer needs and requirements.

· Fluent communication skills in English and Arabic language (both written and spoken, this will be tested).

· IT literate and well versed in Microsoft Office Packages and accurate typing skills

· A team player who is capable of working on their initiative and who is adaptable to changing priorities

· Must be able to work and act without close supervision

· Excellent customer care skills and the ability to respond to a range of customers’ needs

· Good interpersonal skills

· Travel within Jordan (and possibly further afield) may be required for training and deployment purposes

· Consular work can sometimes be stressful and of a sensitive nature. The successful applicant will therefore be expected to maintain absolute consular confidentiality and impartiality

Working Hours and Remuneration:

The position is full-time, at 37 hours a week with considerations of flexibility depending on circumstances.

Pay is on the Embassy A2 (L) scale, with a salary of JOD 1097 per month depending on the candidate’s skills and experience. The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (pro rated) plus 14 public holidays.

 

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:

  • Receive the appropriate level of standard security clearance;
  • Have (or be willing to obtain) the right to live and work in Jordan. Candidate's residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility.
