Purpose:

Working as a consultant, advisor and trainer, you will help transform how the British government uses digital to deliver communications campaigns across Latin America. As part of a regional communications team you will play an active role in campaign planning and implementation to ensure our UK diplomatic missions (embassies and high commissions) are maximising the effectiveness of digital channels, and using insight and evaluation to create impactful and targeted digital communications. Your sector knowledge and experience will enable you to provide strategic advice to senior UK diplomats on how to embed digital in missions across the region and empower you to represent the Digital Transformation Unit (DTU) in the region and speak at regional events. You will also support the DTU in delivering across the breadth of its agenda, including service transformation, policy transformation, communications transformation, and driving innovation.

STRATEGIC COMMS & CAMPAIGNS

  • Provide expert guidance and advice at a regional and local level to ensure communications campaigns make strategic use of digital communications techniques and platforms and ensure digital communications are fully effective, make use of audience insight, are properly targeted and evaluated.

DIGITAL BEST PRACTICE

  • Drive the improvement of visual content across social media channels, and work with local teams to adopt a story-telling approach to digital content.
  • Drive the use of evaluation and data insight to inform campaign planning and understand the impact of our digital communications
  • Ensure content on GOV.UK worldwide pages is of a high editorial quality, meets UK government editorial style guidelines and is appropriately positioned as part of our overall digital communications strategy
  • Monitor and provide expertise on regional and local digital communications trends, and explore new digital opportunities for the FCO. Develop a network of external contacts across the region to ensure the FCO is fully plugged-in to the latest thinking and movements in the digital sphere. Advise DTU on upcoming regional digital communications activity and on emerging regional and local digital trends.
  • Act as a champion for the use of digital across all areas of FCO work, engage with key stakeholders, including ambassadors, and present on digital at regional conferences and other speaking events.
  • Capture and share examples of best practice, including examples from outside the FCO.

LINE MANAGEMENT

  • Set clear direction for the Digital Content Producer and manage their day-to day work. Ensure the hub is providing high quality, timely customer support for FCO staff in the region.

TRAINING:

  • Identify gaps in digital skills/knowledge within the region and work with colleagues in London to develop effective digital training materials and courses. Deliver training to FCO diplomats, communicators and digital editors at conferences, through face-to- face classroom courses, and remotely
  • Provide training on the GOVUK CMS

OTHER

  • Provide support to local teams and London colleagues during crisis situations
  • Provide resilience for central Strat Comms and Campaigns function in London where work needs advancing or covering out of hours


  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in digital communication – ideally in a digital communications agency or a large-scale organisation delivering regular communications campaigns
  • Demonstrable experience planning strategic use of digital communications for campaigns based on data insights and using paid advertising
  • Understanding of audience profiling techniques
  • Knowledge of social media evaluation tools beyond native Twitter and Facebook analytics. Experience using Brandwatch or Newswhip would be valued
  • Knowledge of the social media landscape in Latin America and how different social media channels are being used across the continent
  • An effective communicator with strong customer service skills, and comfortable presenting to and persuading senior staff

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Understanding /experience of dealing with and managing corporate brands
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the political and media environment in the Americas, and ideally in the UK
  • Graphic design and production skills, including experience of Photoshop or equivalent
  • Video production and editing skills, including experience using iMovie, Adobe Premiere Elements, Final Cut Pro or equivalent
  • Experience delivering training and/or designing training to be delivered by others
  • Experience of working in a crisis situation or delivering under high pressure would be highly regarded
