Main purpose of the job:

This post offers a unique and exciting opportunity to join a friendly and creative digital and a wider communications team at the heart of the British Embassy. We are looking for an innovative and energetic Digital Communications Officer to carry out digital diplomacy for all sections operating in the Embassy. 

The post holder will have a creative and challenging role responsible for coordinating all aspects of the UK in China.  They will develop eye-catching and innovative content for the British Embassy’s social media channels, both Chinese and international ones. The Digital Communications Officer will manage a range of activities including setting up and establishing dedicated digital channels, drafting social media plans and messaging, developing content calendars, and creating engaging online material (e.g. infographics, videos, audios).

The successful candidate will be a confident and proactive person – spotting opportunities and thinking creatively.  S/he will have the skills to identify and engage a range of target audiences online. S/he will need a proven track record in digital and/or traditional media. A flexible and cooperative team approach and good interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

The British Embassy as a whole develops and maintain relations between the UK and China and covering the full range of issues including bolstering global security, increasing mutual economic prosperity, establishing stronger people-to-people ties as well as supporting British nationals in China.

The Communications Team is a busy team but work in an environment where learning and development is encouraged and all team members support each other during particularly busy periods. There are often opportunities to try new projects or work on different areas.

Social media:

The job holder will work closely with Embassy Head of Digital within the Communications Section, developing and maintaining the British Embassy’s digital communications activities (using both Chinese channels such as weibo, weixin, Kuaishou and western channels including Twitter and Facebook).

These activities would include (but not be limited to):

  • Drafting social media plans and messaging, developing content calendars and conducting digital campaigns.
  • Liaising with external and internal partners for integrated online and offline campaigns.
  • Creating engaging online material (e.g. infographics, HTML5, creative imagery and video content).
  • Planning, filming and editing video content to use on Embassy and Ambassador’s social media channels.
  • Identifying and working with key influencers on social media.
  • Providing data analysis and evaluation of British embassy digital media activities.
  • Reviewing new technologies and exploring new developments in the digital landscape to ensure Embassy communications exploit emerging trends and remain relevant to their audience.

Website

The job holder will need to cover maintenance work for the Embassy’s external website (gov.uk/world/china) when the Web Editor is absent.

These activities would include (but not be limited to):

  • Checking and uploading content to the website with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Liaising with relevant sections on specific web projects and providing professional suggestions and advices.
  • Liaising with Asia-Pacific Web Hub for any relevant subjects.

Covering wider communications work

The job holder will work in the wider Communications team and support other team members when needed during extremely busy period.

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of working with Chinese and Western social media and a communications or media environment
  • Experience of filming and editing videos
  • Writing story-telling Wechat articles
  • Web content design and using website development software
  • Qualification in PR/Communications/IT
  • Advanced video filming and editing
  • Formatting tool to edit Wechat
  • Infographic design
  • Interest in and awareness or experience of the UK.

This is a fixed-term role for one year.

External Non-Chinese National Candidates. We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 11,272/month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY 15,789/month for British Nationals and spouses/partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
