Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission in Singapore is part of a worldwide network of 230 United Kingdom overseas missions, representing British security, prosperity and consular interests abroad. We are currently looking to recruit a Driver for our Defence section. The successful candidate will work closely with the two other Drivers in the High Commission team, as well as with the Transport Manager.


Roles and responsibilities/what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  1. Driving the Defence Section car for the Defence Adviser and his team. Providing reliable, safe and well planned services with a focus on customer service. Daily review of transport bookings and strict adherence to the High Commission’s Transport Policy
  2. Providing driving support for visitors to the British High Commission including being actively involved in the planning of routes, liaising with key visit stakeholders and being able to work and react to fast paced and ambiguous conditions during the visit
  3. Weekly cleaning of all British High Commission cars, including additional cleaning prior to major visits.
  4. Sending vehicles for timely and regular servicing & LTA inspections as required, with escalations to the Transport Manager
  5. Monitoring of deadlines for Road Tax and Insurance payments including the provision of quotations to the Transport Manager
  6. Processing all required payments and receipts for ERP and Shell cards in consultation on a weekly basis.
  7. Providing ad-hoc support to Defence Section and other teams in the British High Commission as and when required

Essential on arrival:

  • A valid Class 3 driving license with no points deducted and no serious traffic offences on their record
  • Excellent knowledge of the road network and traffic system in Singapore
  • A good understanding of the Highway Code
  • Previous experience as a limousine or private driver is an advantage
  • A basic understanding of Microsoft Office (e.g. to check diaries)

They will be well presented, physically fit, and able to work under pressure and with staff of all levels of seniority. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude, flexible approach to working hours as overtime and work on weekends are occasionally required, and the ability to work collaboratively as a team player.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary of SGD 2,205 per month and a generous annual wage supplement (as part of total guaranteed remuneration) of an additional 2 months’ salary paid out in December each year, Central Provident Fund (CPF) payment in lieu for non-Permanent Resident foreign nationals, 23-days annual leave entitlement and a health insurance plan. The basic salary is non-negotiable.

We have a generous leave offer including: 23 days annual leave, increasing to 25 after 5 years' service, with the option to carry over up to 10 days into the subsequent leave year; 13 public holidays; generous maternity and paternity leave; and childcare leave. We encourage volunteerism and offer up to 3 days paid volunteer leave.

We offer medical insurance to support staff with the high costs of healthcare in Singapore and periodic reimbursement for the cost of eye tests and replacement eye wear.

All new hires undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses that must be completed in order to pass probation.

Working Patterns:

Normal working hours are 44 per week, 7.30am to 5.15pm from Monday to Friday, but the role requires occasional evening and weekend attendance depending on operational requirements. Overtime rates are paid for any hours in excess of 44 per week.

BHC Singapore supports and promotes flexible working, where operationally feasible, as a crucial part of our inclusive offering – in this role this must be balanced against the operational needs of the High Commissioner and other staff.

Other information:

In addition to the duties which this job normally entails, you may from time to time be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of the High Commission, including playing a part in the corporate life of the mission and supporting any crisis response.
