Main purpose of job:

Working in the Technology Trade Team you will provide advice, research, and support for UK companies who are looking to promote their technology in the Japanese market. This will require project management of the Tech campaign – focusing on Fintech, AI, IoT and 5G - stakeholder management, research and awareness of industry trends, and direct advice to UK companies in line with the DIT Regional Trade Plan.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Promote the UK’s strengths in technology and services to the Japanese market by engaging with key UK and Japanese stakeholders including the UK and Japanese Governments and influencers. Lead delivery of the Japan Network’s programme in key major events such as London Tech Week and Nikkei Finsum. Research and identify trends of the Japanese technology market and identify potential new areas for the UK companies to win contracts in short to long term. 
  • Account manage the UK and Japanese companies, supporting the UK companies to win contracts/expand their business in the Japanese market. Develop a pipeline of opportunities for UK companies to win contracts with Japanese companies. 
  • Identify market access issues that UK companies face in entering the Japanese market and working with the Head of the Technology team, develop and implement an action plan to tackle these. This will need close working with relevant stakeholders across and beyond the network including the Japanese and the UK Government Departments and influencers. 
  • Contribute to the wider work of the Embassy, including taking an active role in the crisis response plan and participating in crisis exercises. 
  • Working closely with a junior staff, provide mentorship and coaching to help build his/her sector knowledge and skills. Help provide clarity of direction where necessary. 
  • Fluent or business Japanese language skills (JLPT level 1 or equivalent).
  • Fluent or business level English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 875 points or above or equivalent), with experience of working in an English speaking environment.
  • Understanding and experience in working in technology sector.
  • 5+ years experience in either a sales or consultancy background of technology sector would be useful but not essential.
