An exciting opportunity to work in a team that helps shape the British Government’s policy and engagement on development and human rights at the UN in the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council and its functional commissions.
The successful candidate will be working in the Human Rights Team, acting as a policy adviser and focal point for a range of human rights and development issues, as well as supporting the rest of the team as required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, those outlined below. The successful candidate should be prepared to work flexibly across a range of tasks:
- Act as policy adviser and UK Mission focal point on a diverse portfolio of human rights issues including: by coordinating UK positions with relevant departments in London, representing the UK at like-minded and United Nations meetings and special events, and providing advice, briefing and other policy support to Ambassadors and other UK officials in New York.
- Policy areas of focus likely to include protecting civil society space at the UN, ageing, youth and marginalised groups.
- Provide policy cover and support as needed to other members of the team and wider Mission on human rights issues, the Third Committee of the General Assembly, and the ECOSOC Functional Commissions.
- Support delivery across the team’s operations as needed, including leading on high-level visits and events and associated tasks, briefing and advising UK Mission senior officials, and management of the Third Committee interns.

Key Requirements
The ideal candidate will be able to:
- demonstrate excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills;
- show the ability to prioritise and deliver results on multiple areas of work; and,
- display a keen interest in developing their skills.
Essential on arrival:
- At least two years previous work experience relevant to the role.
- A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
- Comprehensive understanding of the United Nations system.
- Proficient knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of the British Government, the British Foreign Office and the Department for International Development.
- Experience of public service and/or public policy.
- Knowledge of international human rights issues, or wider international relations.
