Main purpose of job:


Work with the Development Counsellor, the embassy’s senior representative for the UK Department for International Development (DFID), to support DFID’s engagement with the US government, think tanks, advocacy organisations, etc. to advance the UK’s development policy objectives in the US. The postholder will be part of DFID’s Global Partnerships and Multilateral Effectiveness Department (GPMED). GPMED manages DFID’s relationships with other donors and is based in DFID’s HQ offices in the UK. The postholder will work with a wide range of DFID and other UK Government departments to set aid policy and monitor delivery of objectives.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Track, report and help influence US policy on development (50%)


  • Support the Development Counsellor’s engagement with the US government to influence US policy in line with UK lobbying requests and DFID priorities, including tracking changes in US development policy and the US government system (including new policy announcements, the development budget, related legislation in Congress, and appointments).  

 


  • Provide regular reporting, reflecting on broader strategic direction of US development policy and analysis of implications for UK, working closely with GPMED team members based in the UK.

 


  • Assist the Development Counsellor in building and maintaining a network of contacts across the US government, as well as across the wider think-tank, advocacy, and NGO community.

 


  • Respond to regular information requests from DFID colleagues and from US contacts

 


Contribute to the wider work of the Foreign Security and Political Group (FSPG) & GPMED (25%)


  • Produce initial drafts of briefing for Ambassador, Deputy Ambassador and other embassy teams on development policy, working closely with FSPG colleagues and others based in the Embassy. This includes contributing to wider Embassy reporting, senior visits and public diplomacy activities on foreign and security policy issues.

 


  • Provide support to GPMED, especially the Development Partners team based in the UK, supporting US, Canada and other donor engagement work.


Provide administrative and logistical support, including managing visits by Ministers and senior officials (25%)


  • Work with the Embassy Senior Visits Team to help plan meetings and oversee logistics for regular visits by DFID Ministers and senior officials.

 

        Provide administrative support to the Development Counsellor including: coordinating meetings, maintaining a database of key contacts, and managing monthly expense claims.


Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations, Political Science, or a related field.


At least 3 years of experience in a professional work environment.


 



Master’s Degree.


 Knowledge of US/UK development policy.
