Background:


  • This internship position would support the various trade and investment teams of the DIT Houston office on specific projects, initiatives and administrative/management duties in the following sectoral areas – Energy, Environment and Infrastructure, Capital Investment, Tech and Creative, Life Sciences and Advanced Engineering

  • The Department for International Trade (DIT) in Houston, located at the British Consulate General in Houston is the United Kingdom’s diplomatic mission responsible for the South of the US (Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma). DIT is the international business development agency of the Government of the United Kingdom and works to foster transatlantic business relations between the US and the UK. DIT works closely with DIT headquarters in London, with related agencies in the UK and with representatives of the English Regions and the UK’s Devolved Administrations in the US to assist US companies looking to invest in the UK. (See www.great.gov.uk). DIT also supports British companies looking to export to the USA, through research reports, market access advice and introductions.

     

     

    Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Develop expertise regarding DIT mission and objectives in the wider UK and international context through specific training and personal experience;

  • Conduct research and compile high quality, accurate, and timely reports on industry developments;

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for wider team activities and events as required; and

  • Articulate with confidence the UK and sector propositions through project presentation and deliverables during the last month of internship.



  • Must be a junior or a senior in an undergraduate program, or enrolled in a graduate program by the start date of your internship (least 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework completed). Since this is an unpaid internship, students must receive college credit in exchange for their internships.

  • Seeking students majoring in International Relations, Political Science or International     Trade are preferred.

  • Interests in the fields of Technology, Creative & Media, Finance, Energy and the Environment and/or Life Sciences are preferred.

  • Strong research, analytical and organisational skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • An understanding of international relations and international trade

This program offers internships for 15-25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and up to 40 hours pe week during the summer.  These are unpaid internships, for college credit only, but the Embassy does provide a stipend of $100 per month for transportation costs.

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders, A or J1 Visa holders with valid Work Authorization Document. If you hold a Visa other than an A or J1 Visa you are not currently eligible to work at the Embassy. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance.
