Main purpose of job

Trade and investment is at the very heart of British government policy. The UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) helps British businesses to export, supports inward and outward investment, and champions free trade. Peru is an important business partner for the UK, and there is great potential to grow our trade and investment relationship.

DIT is looking for a Business Development Manager with responsibility for the following sectors: Mining and Energy. This a unique opportunity to work within the Trade and Investment Team team at the British Embassy in Lima at an exciting and historic juncture. The successful applicant will lead on developing a flourishing bilateral trade and investment relationship in two sectors (Mining and Energy) of great strategic importance. In Lima, the Job Holder will report to the Director of Trade Peru, with strong links to the office of the Ambassador, as well as economic diplomacy, political and other Embassy colleagues and UK government programmes (the Prosperity Fund, Newton Fund for Science and Innovation etc) as well as DIT colleagues across Latin America and Caribbean region and in our UK HQ.

The UK is the largest foreign investor in the Mining sector in Peru, with significant interests in the Energy sector. The job holder will manage a pipeline of new and existing Mining and Energy projects with the aim of boosting exports and investment. The Job Holder will also act as Account Manager for a key group of British mining and energy companies - as well as building a strong network of contacts in Peru, and developing a robust understanding of the main market access issues and a plan of action to address these. 


Roles and responsibilities

  • To lead DIT’s engagement in the Mining and Energy sector in Peru;
  • To act as local Account Manager’ for a select group of British mining and Energy companies, providing regular support with business development and market access, thereby adding value to their operations and developing mutually beneficial relationships;
  • To develop and maintain a pipeline of projects and opportunities, engaging effectively with UK business and local stakeholders in public and private sectors to help realise an agreed target of commercial wins for UK business;
  • To identify an expert understanding of the main global trends in sustainable mining and energy, as well as the local market access and regulatory issues affecting these sectors; work across teams to support implementation of a shared Embassy plan of action to achieve business environment/market access policy objectives via different levers, delivering secondary benefits for British business;
  • To lead a programme of trade promotion related events including exhibitions and conferences, trade missions, webinars and networking events;
  • To support the DIT Peru management on forecasting, reporting, and monitoring DIT's budget.
  • To undertake stakeholder mapping and build a strong network of potential Peruvian business partners/buyers of UK products and services, applying account management techniques;
  • Supporting the wider work of the DIT Peru team and other Embassy sections (when required), including regional engagement, internal coordination and business planning, events and high level visits, analysis and briefing;

-       Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent).

-       Excellent written and oral communication (English and Spanish).

-       Team player with strong interpersonal, communication and relationship skills.

-       A creative problem-solver with a strong interest in the world of business.

-       Exemplary work ethic and a flexible approach to work whilst under pressure.

-       Two or more years professional experience.

-       Evidence of delivering positive results through collaboration and networks.

-       Experience of project or programme management.

-       Good judgement, ability to take initiative and prioritise effectively.

-       Highly proficient user of MS Office, Powerpoint etc.


Language: English and Spanish

Level of language required: Fluent


  • Relevant post-graduate course in economics, trade, business administration, international relations or related subjects.
  • Professional experience of specific sectors mentioned in job description;
  • Knowledge of UK and Peruvian policy landscape and commercial offer
