The Falkland Islands Government has decided to fund a new part-time role, for a period of 12 months, to scope out opportunities and act as the main contact point for all Falkland trade and tourism enquiries in Uruguay. You will need to work closely with contacts in the Falklands and with the Uruguayan authorities and private companies. In addition, you will also work within a small, but active Embassy team, to help organise events and visits. At the end of this 12-month pilot, outcomes will be reviewed and if successful, funding will be sought to maintain and develop the post.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Develop a database of all Uruguayan companies currently exporting to the Falkland Islands, or interested in doing so. Consult with Falkland Island companies on where they see scope for more partnerships.
- Conduct market research / analysis on opportunities for increasing trade with the Islands. Identify barriers to trade and analyse ways to overcome them. Follow up on all Falklands-related commercial enquiries.
- Support the Falkland Islands delegation for their visit to Uruguay’s Expo Prado exhibition. To lead on logistical details, advise on communications, to ensure the Falklands stand is high impact and to strengthen Falkland Islands profile in Uruguay.
- Prepare a Falkland Islands tourism briefing for key Uruguayan sector contacts and follow up on enquiries.
- Develop materials and information resources (eg tourism, trade, education). These should be in Spanish and in electronic format.
- Develop communications materials (press releases, social media posts, infographics, etc.) to better inform Uruguayan audiences on trade and tourism opportunities and to promote stronger people-to-people links.
- Act as a liaison with Uruguayan government authorities on specific export/import requirements from the Falklands (eg securing the necessary certification for agricultural/food products).
- To lead with / signpost ad hoc enquiries received at the Embassy on Falkland Island issues.
- As needed, to support the Ambassador and other Embassy colleagues in promoting the UK’s wider work.
Resources managed:
No direct staff management, but you might be asked to mentor/manage one of the part-time interns. You may also be asked to manage some small project/travel funds (around £5-10,000).
- Previous experience in Trade and/or Tourism sector.
- Good IT skills.
- Experience in project and/or event management.
- A proven ability to carry out research.
- Able to work as part of a team on larger Embassy events (eg Trade Fairs) and individually, with minimal supervision, following up commercial leads.
- Experience with using social media (eg Facebook community management, preparing infographics, photo/video editing).
- Working within the Embassy team you would be expected to participate in wider Embassy learning and to complete the mandatory training on appraisals and line management.
- You may also be asked to visit the Islands (dependent on travel funds).
- This is a part-time role of 20 hours a week. Therefore the job is suitable for flexible working patterns, subject to agreement with the line manager.
This is a new part-time position for 12 months. Over the 12 months you will be expected to work towards the following outcomes:
- An increase in trade (both volume and value) between Uruguay and the Islands.
- An increase in the number of tourists visiting the Islands from Uruguay.
- Positive feedback on social media campaigns, with strong audience engagement.
- Positive feedback from companies involved in tourism and trade.
- 5 new Uruguayan exporters and 10 new products added to the range currently exported to the Islands.
- New Falkland exporters to Uruguay identified and assisted.
- If this pilot position is successful in developing trade/tourism links, then we would look to extend the position (subject to agreement to funding from the Falkland Islands Government).
