Applications are invited for the position of Commonwealth Games Liaison Officer  based at the British Consulate in Brisbane. The jobholder will ensure the smooth participation of Home Nation teams (England/ Scotland/ Wales/ Northern Ireland/ Guernsey/ Jersey/ Isle of Man) in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.


The Commonwealth Games Liaison Officer will work to the Brisbane Consulate's Head of Post and support the SRO for the Games (DHM, based in Canberra) to co-ordinate British government support for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. They will work very closely with the FCO Commonwealth Games Programme Co-ordinator based in Canberra.

This is a key stakeholder management and liaison role. The post holder will act as a central conduit for information, building and managing relationships with internal and external relationships, particularly on the ground in Queensland. The post holder will provide regular updates to the Head of Post and SRO and play a full part in the wider Commonwealth Games Programme Board chaired by the SRO.

The Commonwealth Games will take place on the Gold Coast, Queensland from 04-15 April 2018. The stakeholder picture is complex with seven ‘Home Nations’ (England/ Scotland/ Wales/ Northern Ireland/ Guernsey/ Jersey/ Isle of Man) competing. We expect a significant number of athletes from the UK to compete in the Games as well as a large number of supporters to travel to attend the Game.

There will also be wider political interest in the Games (which take place shortly before the UK hosts the Commonwealth Summit) alongside potential trade, investment, and “GREAT” branded opportunities. We also expect a high number of senior/ VIP visitors during Games time. The jobholder will help support all of this wider activity as needed.


Position responsibilities

In advance of the Games, the jobholder’s duties will include:

— Building and understanding the plans of a network of external contacts in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast including:

  • Gold Coast City Council and Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games
  • Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC)
  • Queensland Govt (Premier and Cabinet)
  • Trade and Investment Queensland
  • Queensland Government House
  • Governor General’s Office
  • Commonwealth representatives

— Supporting the design and implementation of GREAT activity (esp. Sports) in the run up and during games time.

— Support  for UK teams (where needed) in their liaison with the Gold Coast Organising Committee (and others).

— Support for UK teams on their logistical requirements as required (e.g., recce visits/ training sites, etc.).

— Support for the wider British High Commission/ Consulate input into the games, including consular preparations, VIP visits, and promotional activities.


During the Games the job-holder will work with the SRO, Head of Post, and FCO Programme Co-ordinator to:

— Resolve any local issues, e.g., with travel, accommodation, passports.

— Organise receptions and other promotional events.

— Respond to specific requirements of VIP visitors, media, and spectators

— Provide crisis support if needed.


After the Games the job-holder will assist the FCO Programme Co-coordinator to close down the project and undertake a lessons learned review.

This will be a demanding, high-paced job, which is likely to require some weekend and evening working, particularly in the build-up to and during Games time. The post holder will need initiative, resilience, and tenacity to achieve results.

The successful applicant will need to be able to juggle the demands of a wide range of stakeholders, which will require excellent communication skills, including the confidence to interact effectively with senior stakeholders and strong negotiating skills.


Candidates will also be able to provide evidence of their skills and expertise in the following areas:

  • Good understanding of Australian and UK government bodies and organisations;
  • Familiarity with working with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Good grasp of project management and/ or experience in running events/ visit.

Candidates must also be able to demonstrate strengths in the following competences, and provide evidence of this in previous jobs at interview:

  • Preferably an individual with a passion for sport.

Salary is at AU$ 70,890 per annum (paid out monthly), calculated pro-rata, plus 11% superannuation.

Initial appointment is for eight (8) months. The formal job description may be subject to amendment in the future.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.
