View Vacancy - Head of Digital
Main purpose of job:
The Head of Digital for the British Consulate General (BCG) New York is a key member of Communications Team within the Political, Press and Public Affairs (PPPA) section. One of the main responsibilities are to manage digital media presence and activity for the BCG in New York, working to promote the work of the UK government across our region; New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut's Fairfield County.
Located in the US’s most important media market, our Consulate is a busy and vital post in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) global network, and as part of the PPA’s communications team, the Head of Digital will work with various Consulate and cross-government departments to create dynamic digital content and branded marketing collateral for the Consulate's projects, events, activities, and services.
The successful candidate will have excellent copy writing, photography and graphic design skills; experience planning and executing successful digital campaigns; experience in day-to-day management of social media channels; and knowledge and interest in foreign policy, trade and culture. This role often functions as a one-person creative and digital design shop, serving not only the Consulate in New York, but also the wider British Embassy and Consulate network in the US as needed. Some press and briefing support will be needed on occasion.
The job holder will be based at the British Consulate General in Midtown Manhattan and will report to the Consulate’s Vice Consul- Head of Communications.
Strategy
- Promote UK interests to a US audience by creating and implementing digital communications plans for regional UK government activities, ministerial and royal visits, human rights initiatives, cultural events, diplomatic and trade programs.
Social media
- Manage and create all content for our digital channels, including GOV.UK website and social media.
- Work with Embassy in DC and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office headquarters in London on promoting global initiatives and campaigns, particularly on promoting the UK as a great place to invest and do business..
Digital design
- Print and digital design work for projects like event invitations, signage, infographics, etc. in accordance with the FCO’s global brand guidelines.
- Act as in-house photographer, including editing, distribution, and archiving.
- Act as in-house videographer, including ideation, direction, shooting, and editing.
- Direct and produce event A/V and brand activation for high-level galas, receptions, and panels.
- Occasional work with external social media and public relations agencies to design and implement paid social campaigns.
Logistics and support
- Source and negotiate with vendors such as photographers and printers.
- Assist the wider PPA team with media outreach and tracking, event ideation and execution, ministerial visits, etc.
- Wider communications support for high-profile ministerial and VIP visits and events.
- Assistance to the Consulate’s senior communications lead with press support, as needed
- Bachelors degree in a related field
- Minimum 2+ years of relevant experience in digital media and communications.
- Demonstrated social media platform management fluency, including community building, analytics, campaign strategy and management.
- Strong technology proficiency in Mac/PC operating systems and fluency within Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat), Final Cut Pro, familiarity working with content management systems & editing HTML.
- Copy-writing skills (web articles, press releases, social media copy, etc.), with exceptional spelling, grammar and punctuation in alignment with style guidelines. Digital media marketing experience (paid and organic).
- Experience working within a large organization’s brand guidelines and guardianship.
- Ability to work with external partners and manage vendors and contractors
- Experience photographing high profile events (both shooting and editing). A/V knowledge and experience a plus.
- Ability and willingness to work well as part of a small team.
- Strong organisational and problem solving skills.
- A track record of designing or delivering proactive publicity activities to advance policy or other objectives.
- Awareness of the UK Government’s work in the US, and the international priorities of the UK Government.
- Strong networking and interpersonal skills.
- Flexible, and able to switch tasks and manage multiple projects as priorities dictate.
- Ability and interest in attending and staffing occasional evening or weekend events and receptions.
Under US State Department requirements, the Mission may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders or G visa holders*. *A visas are acceptable at the Embassy and Consulates. The UK Mission to the UN (UKMIS) accepts G visas, and British Defence Staff (BDS) outposts accept A or NATO visas.

Individuals who are Green Card holders, UK/US dual citizens, and non US taxpaying citizens will be paid a net salary based on a simulated US tax status.
