Main purpose of job:

To support the Head Chef in all their duties at the Residence of the British High Commissioner to Kuala Lumpur.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Prepare ingredients for dishes following instructions by Head Chef;
  • Assist Head Chef in cooking dishes for small or large breakfasts, lunches, dinners, afternoon teas, buffets and receptions;
  • Assist Head Chef in cooking dishes for High Commissioner’s personal requirements;
  • Assist the Head Chef in plating up food attractively for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, afternoon teas, buffets and receptions;
  • Monitor stock levels of basic ingredients and advise Head Chef when purchasing is required;
  • In Head Chef’s absence – provide meals for the High Commissioner and guests;
  • Operate commercial cooking equipment such as stoves, ovens, cookers, fryers and hotplates;
  • Possess a good basic knowledge of FSMS/ HACCP guidelines;
  • Possess minimum level Food Handling certificate or equivalent;
  • Ensure that food supplies are stored properly and used resourcefully avoiding excessive wastage;
  • Make sure that the kitchen is clean and organised at all times;
  • Work and communicate with external vendors regarding kitchen maintenance and recycling system;
  • Any other duties that support the Head Chef in their role and the Residence team in general.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

  • Government Procurement Card
  • Evidence of successful completion of catering course from reputable catering or general college.
  • Basic food handling certificates.
  • A passion for food and food preparation.
  • A good palate.
  • An eye for detail and good presentation skills.
  • A desire to learn.
  • An interest in sustainability.

Language requirements: 

  • English
  • Bahasa Melayu

Level of language required:

  • Advanced
  • Basic
  • Previous experience not essential, recent graduates will be considered. A simple preparation and cooking test will be given at interview.

This is advertised as a full-time, fixed-term role of 12 months in Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to formal training, collaboration with a wide range of colleagues will deliver on-the-job learning experiences, including

  • Working in a diplomatic mission;
  • Understanding how UK international development assistance is managed / implemented;
  • Understanding effective programme management (including Monitoring, Reporting, Evaluation, and Learning). 

Working patterns:

The standard working hours for the High Commission is 36.25 hours per week.
