The British Embassy in Tunis is looking for a dynamic team player to take up the position of a Residence Cook grade S1.

Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will design and deliver a high quality range of different menus at the Residence which provide a really enjoyable dining experience, whether dinner, lunch, breakfast, or receptions, either small or at scale; and have the guest wanting to return for more.

The dining experience should be consonant with the UK’s high standing in Tunis and the importance of the building. The job requires strict maintenance of the highest level of hygiene, organisational skills and ensuring that the residence kitchen is always prepared to cater to a varied audience.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Preparation of all food requirements in the British Ambassador’s Residence:

  • Design menus in consultation with the Ambassador and the Residence Manager and deliver food for events at the British Residence
  • Liaise with Residence Manager to produce food reflecting themes and objectives of events, and incorporating dietary needs.

Hygiene:

  • Responsible for health, hygiene and sanitation practices in the residence kitchen, including educating staff when required, to ensure all health & safety requirements are met.

Procurement - Food and supplies shopping:

  • Appropriate sourcing of fresh foods and beverages supplies from local markets for all meals served at the residence.
  • Ordering and purchasing supplies for the kitchen.

Financial Responsibility:

  • Residence Imprest – justify receipted official spend to Corporate Services on a monthly basis.
  • Justify and reconcile GPC expenditure.

Staff Management:

  • Supervising casual kitchen staff during events.
  • Booking casual staff, tracking and costing food expenditures for events and credit card reconciliation.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

  • Good in English and Arabic
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the business hospitality area, ie hotel, private residence, restaurant, catering company, with similar role and responsibilities
  • Cooking skills to high standards
  • Team working and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and quality
  • Creativity and flexibility
  • Easily adaptable to ever-changing requirements for menus/guest counts and timing of service
  • Ability to work under pressure and normally under tight deadlines
  • Strong organisational skills, able to work under pressure delivering a high quality service.
  • Ability to change and review practices with other members of the team with a view to improve service.
  • Effective work and time management; ability to work to deadlines and targets and manage a heavy work flow
  • Proven communication/interpersonal skills - verbal and written
  • Basic IT skills (Microsoft Windows and MS Office)

Working hours and remuneration:

Conditioned working hours are 42 hours gross per week, including evenings and some weekend work. Additional hours worked are compensated with overtime payment. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Mondays to Thursdays and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays. The actual working hours are at the discretion of the Ambassador and depend upon the needs of the Residence. Due to the nature of the work, jobholder is expected to be flexible with work timings.

The British Embassy in Tunisia offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 1,451 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 1,816. This is a full-time, fixed for one year renewable.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.

The appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.

Eligibility:

Candidate must be eligible to work and reside in Tunisia immediately.
