The British Embassy in Poland is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Defence and Security Lead to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) team, for a maternity cover.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build an appetite for British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed.

The successful jobholder will enable UK defence & security companies access high value business opportunities in Poland and Central Europe. He/she will work closely with senior stakeholders in the UK and the region, relevant Embassy teams as well as local Polish contacts to promote UK excellence in defence & security sectors, deliver ambitious local and regional performance targets and unlock commercial opportunities for innovative UK businesses. He/she will manage a team of up to 2 Key Account Managers with their respective sector portfolios.

In more detail, main responsibilities will include:

  • Support UK exports and outward direct investment of UK companies in Poland in defence and security sectors. Drive team’s defence and security activities through delivering a plan of strategic engagement, to deliver high value wins for UK companies;
  • Oversee and manage project delivery, promotional and follow up activities to meet team’s annual performance targets in defence and security sectors (including those based on the value of business won by UK companies);
  • Build and maintain effective government and industry stakeholder partnerships to support Poland’s modernisation of the 2 sectors and to further build UK’s recongnisability and high profile on the Polish market;
  • Proactively monitor market developments and identify opportunities for UK companies across defence and security sectors in Poland and the CE region, and promote them with the relevant UK audiences (companies & business organisations);
  • Match the UK offering in defence and security to local market opportunity, to help optimise UK business development in Poland and the CE region;
  • Promote opportunities in the Polish defence and security sectors to British companies and relevant business organisations as well as promote UK capabilities, experience and excellence to relevant Polish stakeholders;
  • Monitor relevant regulatory and policy developments in Poland, EU and the UK – particularly in regulated sectors - to effectively identify and address opportunities and address emerging market barriers for UK business;
  • Represent DIT Warsaw in relevant European and regional trade campaigns. Support the Regional Sector Lead in driving the campaign activity and target achievement;
  • Co-operate closely with other Embassy teams, relevant external stakeholders and DIT colleagues across the CE and wider Europe regions;
  • Lead a team of 2 Key Account Managers with their respective sector portfolios. Ensure team's effective contribution to Warsaw DIT overall performance.
  • Fluency in English and Polish (both oral and written);
  • Leadership skills;
  • Strategic commercial and economic awareness;
  • Working cooperatively with others and building relations;
  • Proven track record of business development and in delivering results;
  • Experience of stakeholder and customer management;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Confidence in dealing with senior contacts and colleagues, and in handling customers;
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure;
  • Focus on continuous learning and development for you and your team;
  • Education to university level;
  • Good IT skills.
  • At least 2 years experience of managing a team or working towards reaching performance targets, preferably in an international context;
  • Knowledge and experience in defence and security sectors;
  • Innovative attitude towards project delivery, customer service and performance management;
  • Track record of delivering projects in virtual/regional teams;
  • Experience with Oracle systems and databases.

This is a maternity cover full-time position of 5 days (37.5 net per week).

The gross salary for this position is PLN 12,336 gross per month. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 20 or 26 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Polish / UK public holidays per year.

Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by the local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to the Polish references check and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three months.

Candidates must have pre-existing right to live and work in Poland for the duration of the job offer in order to apply. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Warsaw are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to Polish employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Poland and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary pending EU Exit. If requirements change additional eligibility information will be shared during the recruitment process.

Working patterns

BE Warsaw has a strong commitment to work/life balance. Office hours are 8:30 – 16:30, staff are encouraged to leave on time, and the building is locked up at 6pm. Flexi-hours are also possible within the Embassy building’s opening hours (0730-1800).

We have mobile technology and most staff in the team work from home one day a week.
