Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission, Islamabad has a vacancy for an Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) starting as soon as possible.

Background: The majority of visa applications made in Pakistan are processed in either Abu Dhabi or the UK however, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has a small team in Islamabad who are responsible for assessing visa applications and printing decisions once they are made. The objective of the role is to provide high quality, efficient and non-discriminatory visa processing operation which meets published standards and to provide all customers with a firm, fast and fair service. This role carries a high level of responsibility, as the applicant will be managed remotely and will be the key liaison point between UKVI and Other Government Departments across the HMG platform in Pakistan.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assess and resolve visa applications within an agreed timeframe. You must be able to analyse information and reach a decision quickly and be able to justify this decision both orally and in writing.
  • Ensure that all correspondence is considered and reports or replies prepared within target times in clear and concise English.
  • Deal professionally, with all callers to the Visa Section, whether on the telephone or in person, ensuring that people are treated fairly and responding sensitively to differences.
  • To understand and accurately apply the rules and guidance to visa applications and/or queries
  • To manage the day to day operations of the section and to jointly oversee the management of members of the team.

Essential :

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills:

  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Computer literate.
  • The ability to work quickly and reliably with little supervision and meet challenging targets on a daily basis.
  • Capable of making quick decisions in accordance with set rules and able to show that these decisions are fair and just on all occasions.

The ability to work well under pressure and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Salary Details:  

For BHC candidates, the Local BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, Basic Salary will be ­­­­­­PKR 199,943 per month plus 80,000 security allowance minus tax abatement.

Conditioned working hours are 41 hours per week. Standard working hours are 08:00 to 16:15 Monday to Thursday and 08:00 to 13:15 on Fridays. 25 Days annual leave will be available to take during the temporary contract but will be restricted to a maximum of two weeks consecutively at peak periods of the year and will be dependent on the needs of the business.

VISA, PASSPORT AND SECURITY CLEARANCE RESTRICTIONS (As necessary to perform the role)

Holds one of the following passports: UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

Each application is considered on its own merits, but the successful applicant will be subject to satisfactory security clearance. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed for this post is Official Sensitive. Due to the security requirements of the position applicants should be British, US, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian or EU national who have spent at least two of the last five years in their home countries. Applicants must be willing to undergo the clearance procedure, and your application should set out your nationality and places of residence for the past five years.

Applicants must have appropriate permissions/visa to be able to work in Pakistan.Applicants must be available in a full-time capacity. This is not a part time position. Applications are invited from eligible candidates who complete the core competency form providing evidence of how they meet the competencies.

The level of security clearance required means that individuals with dual Pakistani nationality are ineligible to apply.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

Employment of the successful applicant will only be confirmed following the successful completion of the Entry Clearance Officer training course. This is a pass/fail examined course and candidates must be available to attend the course once the course date is confirmed.
