Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (Policy & Political roles)
UKDEL (UK Delegation to NATO)

UKDEL NATO sits at the heart of UK Defence. Its work is valued highly by FCO and Ministry of Defence(MOD) Ministers alike. The job holder will work in a delegation dealing with the largest range of challenges NATO has faced since the end of the Cold War, with conflict in Syria, Islamic State terrorism and a resurgent and non-compliant Russia.

The main aims of the role are to help communicate the UK Government’s commitment to - and priorities for - NATO across a broad range of issues, and to help NATO develop and deliver a more effective and integrated approach to communications planning and delivery. This is a particularly exciting time for the Delegation, as it co-ordinates the delivery a global communications campaign to celebrate NATO’s 70th Anniversary, culminating in the Leaders’ Meeting in London in December 2019.

The job holder will work in a small team responsible for communications activities that help deliver UK policy objectives within NATO. Main activities include: helping the UK Delegation develop and deliver communications campaigns to support their policy work; working with NATO Staff and other Allies to improve NATO’s approach to communications planning and delivery; and oversight of NATO’s Trust Fund for Strategic Communications. As with all jobs in the Delegation, we promote an adaptable and responsive approach, which means the job is likely to evolve over time to deal with changing circumstances and priorities.

The job holder will occasionally be required to work extended hours during peak periods, including in the run-up to Ministerial meetings and Summits.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Project Management – Sitting on the NATO Public Diplomacy Committee, which has oversight of NATO’s Communications Strategy;

  • Oversight of the UK-NATO Strategic Communications Fund ensuring that the funds are spent effectively in line with the UK’s NATO priorities;

  • Developing (with the Deputy Head of Mission) the UK Delegation Communication Strategy, and delivering it throughout the year;

  • Supporting delivery of NATO Strategic Communication campaigns, working with NATO International Staff and colleagues across the FCO and MoD;

  • Working closely across the HMG network to deliver a variety of NATO @70 campaign activity, including the Leader’s Meeting to be held in London in December 2019;

  • Line Management of an Assistant Media & Communications Officer;

  • Contributing on a variety of activity to improve UKDEL NATO’s effectiveness – embedding communications work in policy and supporting corporate activity.

  • Professional experience in public relations and/or communications;

  • Experience of delivering communications campaigns, including monitoring & evaluation;

  • Ability to deliver clear messages using a variety of communications channels;

  • Ability to work in a team;

  • Fluent written and spoken English;

  • IT and digital skills, including Outlook and Word.

  • Experience and/or interest in International Relations;

  • Experience of building networks and using third parties to amplify key messages;

  • Strong interpersonal and customer focus skills.
