Main Purpose of Job:
You will be part of the dynamic and energised Trade and Economics Team in the UK Mission to ASEAN. You will be responsible for delivering strategic series of engagements with the ASEAN Economic Community which seeks to develop ASEAN’s economic and trade agenda in line with the UK’s principles of open, free and fair trade, boosting ASEAN-UK trade ties and increasing the UK’s visibility to the ASEAN Secretariat. You will contribute to delivering the UK Government’s growth mission.
You will set sector-specific strategies, articulating how UK support contributes to both ASEAN and UK needs, with an immediate focus on decarbonisation and digital agendas. You will use the range of levers available to UK Government creatively, from programme funding to Ministerial-level engagements. Your priorities will be guided by market access opportunities and challenges faced by UK companies active in Southeast Asia, information gathered through relationships with the market opening officers across UK embassies in Southeast Asia. You will approach your tasks with the UK’s private sector in mind, building relationships with UK companies and coordinating joint public-private sector engagements with the ASEAN Secretariat. You will work closely with the UK-ASEAN Business Council to deliver shared objectives.
To be successful, you will be able to understand ASEAN’s policy objectives and be able to give an evidenced judgement of ASEAN’s success and challenges, reporting your findings proactively. You will build strong working relationships with the ASEAN Secretariat, getting the inside track on their objectives and aiding delivery of UK led activities with ASEAN.
What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:
The exact coverage of the role will need to respond to the asks on the team at the time of commencement and you should open to change and flexibility. You should be open to regional travel across Southeast Asia.
Resources Managed (staff and expenditure): No staff. Ad hoc budget and contract management will be required.

Working Patterns:
Normal working hours are 39.5 (gross) per week: 07:30hrs to 16:00hrs from Monday to Thursday and 07:30hrs to 13:00hrs. At present, all staff working in the FCDO, Jakarta are expected to attend the office for three days per week, subject to change. Subject to operational demands and line manager approval, the team operates a ‘core hours’ policy of 09:00 to 15:00 with individual flexibility around that and two days of work from home per week on request.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in Indonesia with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Jakarta is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law. In relation to this, the successful candidate will need to arrange for his/her own Police Certificate. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
