The United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations in Geneva represents the interests and policies of the UK at the UN and is recruiting a highly motivated Migration, Labour and UN Reform Intern.

They will work in the Humanitarian and Protracted Crises Team. The intern will monitor meetings and events at the ILO and other UN agencies, draft reports from meetings, and participate in organising events and high-level visits. The successful applicant will also work on modern slavery in the context of migration, implementing the Mission’s Modern Slavery objectives and liaising with key UN agencies on this issue. They will be expected to flex across team priorities, to help cover meetings on wider humanitarian and protracted crises issues as necessary. A supervisor will guide the intern and provide on-the-job training and evaluation. The internship will offer the intern an opportunity to get insight into the work of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development and to learn about working on multilateral issues in an international context.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor meetings and events at the ILO and other UN agencies, draft reports from meetings, and participate in organising events and high-level visits;

  • Work on modern slavery in the context of migration, implementing the Mission’s Modern Slavery objectives and liaising with key UN agencies on this issue;
  • Flex across team priorities, to help cover meetings on wider humanitarian and protracted crises issues as necessary.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Strong interest in humanitarian policy, multilateral policy, international relations or other relevant discipline;
  • The successful candidate needs to be highly motivated, flexible, and have excellent skills in communication and organisation;
  • Willingness to undergo a mandatory security check;
  • IT skills: Good working knowledge of MS Word.
  • University degree in the field of Humanitarian Policy or International Relations;
  • Prior internship or work experience in the context of the UN, in particular from Geneva;
  • Knowledge of French.

All applicants should have permission to live and work in Switzerland. Applicants must hold a full passport valid for at least 12 months for any EU / Schengen country.

The UK Mission will offer the intern a monthly training allowance of 1,250 CHF. Please note that the intern will need to arrange and pay for his or her own travel, accommodation, as well as any other living costs.

The final appointment will be dependent upon successful security clearance. Please note that selected candidates will have to visit the Mission (around 4-6 weeks before starting) for a security interview, which is also at their own cost.

Please be advised that the UK Mission will not be able to meet the travel costs incurred when travelling to the interview, security check nor the costs connected with relocation if offered a position.

The successful applicant may be able to start sooner than the advertised start date, in case the jobholder is available.
