Department for International Trade (DIT)

Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade works to secure UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade. DIT has representation across the African continent led from the DIT Africa Hub in Johannesburg by the newly appointed Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. The UK Government’s scale of ambition is incredibly high for Africa as we seek a step change in our relationships across the continent. To help achieve this ambition a new Regional Trade Plan (i.e.DIT Africa Business Plan) has been created which forms our strategic plan over the coming years. 

Working with the Chief Operating Officer a new position is being created to lead a one year programme of work and change to ensure that we have the right structures and tools in place across the Africa network to deliver the RTP and to drive forward its implementation. The Post holder will be at the forefront of implementing the RTP, Ministers and HMTC’s vision for the continent.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Set the strategic direction for the DIT Africa change programme; based on the RTP and vision of HMTC.
  • Over the 1-year Posting implement the change programme, operationalise and drive forward the RTP.
  • Use project management processes and techniques to achieve this.
  • Develop a method to evaluate progress and the change as well we necessary governance.
  • Engage extensively and regularly with the network to build understanding and support for the changes.
  • Horizon scan for challenges and issues in order to minimise chances of them materialising.
  • Engage externally and internally (including London) to ensure momentum for implementation and various milestones are met. 
  • Be adaptable and flexible as new opportunities and challenges arise.
  • Form a key flexible and adaptable member of the Africa Hub; supporting the HMTC, Deputy HMTC, COO and other members of the leadership and broader network

  • Postgraduate degree and/or undergraduate degree and other professional qualification.
  • At least three years professional work experience
  • proven track record of delivering on time-bound change management programmes
  • proven project management skills and experience
  • proven experience of driving change in teams
  • strong leadership skills and ability to motivate and bring teams along.
  • excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including to build credibility with senior government/business representatives as well as the entire Network;
  • excellent organisational and self-management skills to respond effectively to tight – and changing – deadlines and priorities;
  • sound knowledge of MS Office and project management tools.
  • the ability to learn quickly and work with a high degree of autonomy
  • a positive “can-do” attitude that can see way through challenges. 
  • Experience of working with Government departments and/or public-sector agencies

  • The British High Commission pays in full for the Key Care Plus option on Discovery Health for staff including spouses/partners and dependants.
