Main purpose of job:

Lead work foreign direct investment work within the Department for International Trade (DIT) at the British Embassy in Santiago, Chile. You will work with Chilean venture capital funds, companies, organisations and associations to deliver an increase in their awareness of the UK as an investment destination and to drive new foreign direct investment (FDI) from Chile to the UK. You will work closely with other DIT colleagues (policy, programme and commercial) in the Embassy and Latin America and Caribbean region team to deliver investment objectives as part of a cross Embassy and regional strategies. You will develop excellent relationships with DIT colleagues in the UK and with UK based partner organisations to deliver an impactful programme of activities focused on developing a robust pipeline of Chilean investors, deliver investment targets, and to promote the UK as a destination for Chilean companies.#


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Drive our inward investment agenda in Chile, developing and delivering a strategy for attracting high quality FDI and venture capital from Chile to the UK;
  • Assist Chilean companies and entrepreneurs to successfully locate and expand operations in the UK;
  • Build a strong pipeline of investment projects from key sectors specially aligned with the concept of high economic impact investment and other strategic priorities;
  • Conduct activities to raise the profile of the UK as a FDI location for Chilean companies;
  • Offer high value projects advisory and account management for a number of strategic investment projects from Chile to the UK, both from private sector and high net worth individuals;
  • Institutional relations with relevant Chilean stakeholders, including the federation of industries, sector associations and government, related to inward investment;
  • Support the senior management team to deliver against strategic objectives and targets (regular information sharing and reports as requested by HMA, Country Director, HQ Global operations, ministerial visits, etc);
  • Ensure delivery of targets for number of successful investment projects per fiscal year;
  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders in DIT in the UK and Chilean sectoral business organisations.
  • Contribute to regional FDI initiatives, participating in activities and supporting investment colleagues in the region as needed, and sharing best practices;
  • Lead the regional strategy on a specific sector (to be defined) to implement activities and initiatives relevant to the sector/region; Ensure good financial, project and procurement management of investment work as relevant.

Essential on arrival: 

  • 5 years work experience
  • Business related undergraduate qualification
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience of commercial work and account management
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement

Language requirements: 

  • Language: Spanish and English
  • Level of language required: Fluent written and spoken (CEFR C1 essential; C2 in at least one language preferable) 

Desirable on arrival: 

  • Trade and/or investment experience
