This is an opportunity to work at the heart of the embassy, working on  our scholarship programme for the Philippines and Palau, engaging with high level contacts/alumni of UK universities and the Chevening scholarship programme.

Main purpose of job:

The Policy, Projects and Communication (PPC) section is responsible for promoting links between the UK and the Philippines. It manages bilateral government co-operation, explains the British position on international issues, and builds support for UK policies and views.

The successful candidate will work as part of the British Embassy's Policy, Projects and Strategic Communications (PPC) section to help raise the profile of the United Kingdom in the Philippines through capable administration and promotion of the Chevening Scholarship Programme and other scholarship initiatives of the Embassy.  The candidate must have a strong academic background, relevant work experience and an active interest in, and understanding of, the Philippine and global current affairs, and awareness of education and aid programmes, and development work

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

-Administer the Embassy Scholarship Programme/s through:

  • Marketing and promotion campaigns to strengthen the Chevening brand in the Philippines
  • Following up leads on possible partnerships with companies/organisations, helping them understand the partnership agreements as laid out by the Chevening Secretariat, and progressing them through the MOU process to full partnerships, helping to send more Filipinos on scholarships to the UK.
  • Recruitment to ensure consistently high quality candidates from the Philippines
  • Institutional links with Chevening Alumni to deliver Chevening Programme objectives and enhance the work of the wider embassy
  • Working with the Chevening Alumni to help them to bid for possible funding from the Chevening Secretariat, helping them to understand the process, and financial and evaluation obligations and ensuring all returns are met on a timely schedule. This includes financial management and reporting to seniors on financial status of bids and spending.
  • Take on similar duties for other scholarship programmes if required

-Covering for the Digital officer when necessary, effectively managing the British Embassy’s digital platforms – Gov.UK website, Embassy’s intranet, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (a 24/7 role when covering)

-Be part of the Embassy crisis preparation team, undergoing learning and practice of how the embassy responds in a crisis. This will play to individual strengths, but is likely to include how to conduct embassy communications, in particular digital comms, in a crisis situation (eg a political situation, or an event that impacts a lot of British nationals) or how to assist other teams in the embassy who are in crisis mode

-Be an active part of the bilateral and communications team by contributing to their wider work, eg helping on events, campaigns and visits, covering for the Campaigns and Events Officer and Digital Diplomacy Officer, when necessary. Helping with corporate objectives.

-Providing support to the PPC team, such as assisting with arranging or preparing for visits or events, procurement, or planning team activities.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):   

  • Chevening Funds as applied for each year.
  • Ability to plan and implement marketing and promotion campaigns utilising various media platforms
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) in both Filipino and English - confidence to speak with senior members of the Government, FCO and others.
  • Highly organised, with an eye for detail; able to follow set procedures
  • Able to take instruction, and at all times, work effectively, productively and at times, unsupervised
  • Work effectively and efficiently to meet deadlines, prioritising workloads as necessary
  • Willingness to work effectively and contribute to a developing team
  • Proficient in MS Office, Outlook, Internet Explorer (or other web browsers).
  • Ability to monitor and engage on digital media platforms, to include efficiently editing and uploading content
  • Willing to learn Adobe Photoshop, digital photography and video editing software
  • Relevant educational qualifications demonstrating competence in the core competences identified.
  • Previous work experience in an office environment.
