Main purpose of job:

The Painting and Carpentry Technical Works Group Technician  will be responsible for  Painting and Carpentry works across the British High Commission (BHC) Estate. They will be responsible for the ordering of materials from the store in advance of programmed  works.  They will conduct painting and carpentry works in collaboration with other painters and carpenters in the team effectively and take direction from the Painting Team Leader in the planning and execution of their duties

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Painting (75%) / Carpentry (15%):

  • Painting both interior and exterior surfaces throughout the BHC Estates (comprising of 120+ properties with a mix of both residential and commercial)
  • Sanding of any wood surfaces and preparing for staining
  • Staining of wood furniture
  • Filling and repairing of cracked walls, doors and ceilings
  • Sanding, preparation and varnishing of wooden floors
  • Working in close collaboration with the Estate Team to ensure that basic maintenance works in properties and office are carried out as per FCDO standards and Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Support TWG team by performing multiple maintenance tasks, which include but it not limited to Painting, civil and carpentry work.
  • Complete all required maintenance tasks for all properties within agreed time frames and to agreed standards
  • Ensure relevant contractors meet the requirements of the contracts in terms of work done and agreed time frames.
  • Assemble furniture and other equipment, including installation of appliances and machinery, taping, sanding, painting, fixing doors and windows.
  • Supervise on any work of specialised contractor/ vendor and to ensure the proper maintenance of equipment; also to check whether the work is compliance with FCDO health and safety norms.
  • Respond to emergency calls and maintenance requests assigned by Estate Team. Must be able to handle the multiple tasks.
  • Proactively develop on good practice and learning of FCDO health & safety policy to deliver effective maintenance of equipment and appropriate solution to faults.

10% Driving:

  • Assist in Delivering of materials or driving themselves and TWG colleagues via canter/minibus across the BHC Estate for the delivery of works across the Estate.
  • Ensure the TWG fleet of vehicles are clean and serviced on time.
  • Responsible for ensuring the assigned vehicle is offloaded after the day’s assignments and parked at the allocated slot.
  • Certificate from a Technical Training School in painting and Carpentry
  • Minimum 5 years experience in painting and carpentry works
  • Good computer skills; good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Outlook email
  • Driving Licence for B-C-E class with clean driving record
  • Experience or Training in Masonry, Carpentry, and general works
  • 3 years’ experience as a Class E Driver, driving of a Canter Truck or equivalent
