Main purpose of job:

The Economic research and support officer will provide research support to the Economic Advisor and to ensure that economic knowledge in the Embassy is well recorded and up-to-date.  The job holder will also provide administrative support to the Economics and Digital Team at the British Embassy Jakarta.

The job holder will work closely with other teams in the Embassy and other various UK Government Departments to achieve Her Majesty’s Government objectives. The job holder will also have the opportunity to engage with a variety of stakeholders, including engagement with the Government of Indonesia (such as the Ministry of Finance, Bank Indonesia, Financial Services Authority, The National Planning Agency, Ministry of Trade, and the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs), and other development partners (such as the World Bank, UNDP, ASEAN, and other foreign missions).

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Provide research support to the Economic Advisor on economic, trade, investment, and topics covered under Official Development Assistance Programmes (such as Financial Technology, Intellectual Property, Competition Policy). Maintain key documents such as economic factsheet, briefing packages, etc. Update Economic data and conduct data analysis. Attend meeting with stakeholder and economic related events (such as Indonesia Economic Quarterly and private sector economic briefings) and produce read outs after the event. (30%)          
  • Provide administrative support to the Economics and Digital team, including, but not limited to organising events and meetings, produce minutes of meetings, travel arrangements, maintenance of the contact database, draft and send letters to relevant stakeholders as well as conduct follow up for confirmation when necessary. (25%)
  • Organise visit programmes for regional experts and UK Officials and provide support for relevant Ministerial visits. Provide support for outward visits to the UK as needed. (20%)
  • Financial management: payments, budget management and monthly forecasts which covers team travel and hospitality. (15%)
  • Participate in Embassy corporate activities and work on any other tasks such as support in the Embassy Away Day, Queens Birthday Party, and crisis response roles where needed (10%) 

Learning and development opportunities:

  • The job holder will have a better understanding on economics, and how policy is developed and implemented. The job holder will also be exposed to elements of programme management.
  • The Embassy has an active L&D Committee which works hard to provide a comprehensive L&D offer. There are a wide range of options available for personal development including training courses, coaching and mentoring, job-shadowing, presentations and learning sets. Staff have access to a wide variety of online resources through the Diplomatic Academy and Civil Service Learning. Staff are strongly encouraged to take advantage of all the available opportunities.
  • The jobholder will receive training on financial management and will gain experience in budget management skills, and events planning. The job-holder will be required to take some specific training courses related to financial management, including the use of software packages such as Prism and Hyperion. All new staff undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses covering areas such as diversity, health and safety, and information management.

  • A degree plus at least two (2) years experience in research or team support or Personal Assistant / Secretary role.
  • Excellent administrative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and use of email.
  • Ability to be resourceful and persistence in engaging stakeholders.
  • A self-starter, able to work independently and on their own initiative to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including both written and spoken (English and Bahasa Indonesia).
  • Good understanding of economic data
  • A proven track record of working with foreign mission or international organisations or companies.
  • Knowledge in the ways of work with the Government of Indonesia will be an advantage
