Community Liaison

The British Bilateral Embassy in the Netherlands is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Community Liaison Officer.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Deputy Head of Mission and the Ambassador for the well-being of all staff at Post, in particular advocating for and supporting UK-based staff and families (FCO and PAGs.) and also support incoming and existing families to be happy during their posting to the Netherlands.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Welfare on arrival: welcoming all staff on posting/temporary duty/flexible deployment and accompanying families to ensure as smooth an integration as possible into the life of the Post community; following up to check that the settling in process is working; being a source of referral and support where questions, problems and difficulties arise; providing short Post community induction.

Ongoing welfare support: maintaining close links with UKB families across the Mission, helping them navigate life in the Netherlands, engage with the schools, healthcare and the Embassy. Spotting and supporting those who need a little extra help. And organising occasional social events for the Embassy community.

Information gathering for UK-based officers and their spouses/partners and families, and Local Staff on flexible deployment (including for those not yet at Post). To include information on cost of living indices, spouse/partner employment at Post; children's education (through completion of separate HR School and Nursery Information Sheets of authorised schools at Post); feedback on adult education; career and training opportunities; single officer and foreign born spouse/partner issues; recreational facilities; and social matters.

Advocate for UK-based staff and families in addressing issues of importance with Post Management, including as their representative on Post Joint Management Boards, evacuation/contingency planning and housing committees, and as the chief link between Post and DSFA in London.


  • Good interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Interest in helping people settle in a different culture and society.
  • Knowledge and experience of living abroad;
  • Good computer skills, MS Office tools (word, excel, power point etc).

  • Knowledge or experience of how posting of Her Majesty's Government Officials overseas works:
  • Customer service experience.

The successful candidate will initially be offered a one year contract (with the possibility of extension). The position is part-time, for 5 working days (15 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is €1,199 A2 (L) level (The British Diplomatic Missions in the Netherlands salaries are not subject to annual indexation).

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in the Netherlands are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Dutch employment law.
