Main purpose of job:

The UK’s Department for International Trade is responsible for securing UK and global prosperity by promoting international trade and investment and championing free trade. The position of Trade and Investment Officer (TIO) will focus on building transatlantic business relations in the healthcare and life science industries.

 

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be part of two vibrant teams – the 20 person British Consulate team based in Boston and an 18-person healthcare and life sciences team spread across the US. The role will report to the New England Regional Director and be based at the British Consulate General in Boston MA.

 

The TIO will have responsibility for identifying, generating and managing projects and relationships within the life sciences industry in the New England region, with a particular focus on the health tech, medical device, diagnostics, and healthcare sectors in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Projects will include building R&D partnerships between US companies and the UK, driving clinical trials to the UK, and working to empower UK exporters, deliver Export Wins and help UK companies open US operations. Ideal candidates will have experience in the healthcare or life sciences sector, be highly skilled in building senior level client relationships and managing a variety of projects simultaneously in a fast-moving environment.

 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

 

·       Forge strong relationships with business leaders, trade associations, and interlocutors both in the UK and the US to increase life science transatlantic trade and investment

·       Support UK life science companies with US market access strategy, identifying opportunities for business development, delivering customized chargeable work and help set up US operations

·       Build and provide comprehensive account management to a pipeline of innovative New England headquartered life sciences companies, generating inward investment projects

·       Promote the UK as the leading centre for Life Sciences in Europe by creating social media posts, developing and delivering trade delegations and working collaboratively with colleagues across the US

·       Support UK trade policy objectives in collaboration with other UK government agencies. Assist in showcasing the benefits of the UK/US economic relationship to external audiences.

·       Assist with consular support services in times of crisis

·       Host and/or attend official functions outside of office hours and undertake limited domestic (US) travel and occasional international travel to the UK.

Essential on arrival:

·       Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in a Life Sciences, Sales or Marketing field is preferred;

·       Knowledge of Life Sciences industry and trends in the New England region – and preferably in the UK.

·       Experience/knowledge of the UK's investment proposition and business environment is preferred;

·       Demonstrated ability to build senior level relationships and develop projects through excellent client management

·       Strong emotional intelligence, showing ability to work calmly to deadlines, lead others and manage work which requires a high degree of collaboration.

·       Strong communication skills, both written and oral

·       Proactive, organized and works to deadlines, prioritizes and is able to multi-task;

·       A self-starter, able to work independently and show initiative with limited day-to-day supervision while operating as part of a wider team with shared goals and wide-ranging objectives;

·       Strong networking skills;

·       Computer literacy in standard Microsoft applications;

·       Driving license, Passport and ability to undertake occasional air travel including overnight stays
