The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic person to join the busy Justice & Home Affairs (JHA) team from April 2018. This is a part-time job.

The JHA team is responsible for the UK’s relations with France as they relate to the themes of migration, counter-terrorism (CT) and justice. The successful candidate will support one of the JHA First Secretaries and will focus on the migration portfolio. Main responsibilities include, but not solely: monitor and report developments in France on immigration, support the delivery of UK activity in France including those announced at the recent UK-France Summit package on Calais, organise and oversee visit programmes and support the advancement of HMG objectives on modern slavery.

The successful candidate will be part of the wider Political section at the Embassy, which delivers timely and accurate reporting on key political developments to the UK as well as advance UK priorities in France. You will be a collaborative team player, able to juggle competing priorities and reprioritise at short notice. You will need to be able to work to tight deadlines and be at ease dealing with drafting at pace. We are also looking for someone who is flexible and happy to get involved in different types of projects as needs evolve, ranging from policy to events work.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Supporting the reporting of key developments on the migration agenda in France including through weekly contributions to reports for London and briefing for seniors in the Embassy.
  • Supporting the delivery of projects to advance awareness of modern slavery and prevent vulnerable people from being trafficked to the UK.
  • Supporting the delivery of projects centred on communications in transit and source countries to deter illegal migration; and public diplomacy in France to demonstrate positive UK/French collaboration.
  • Helping to maintain a database of working level contacts in the Calais region, French Government and wider institutions relevant to delivery of project aims.
  • Supporting the work of the wider team through administrative duties including arranging visits and meetings.

Ability to communicate fluently in English and French;

Ability to navigate the French government system and to learn what French policy on a particular subject is and who is responsible, including by “cold calling” new French contacts.

Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and able to learn new IT skills, as required.


Experience in working in the third sector and public sector;

Knowledge of information management including Microsoft SharePoint

Interest in current affairs and understanding of UK and/or French governments.

Proven research and analysis skills, including using the internet as a research tool. Strong IT skills (Outlook, Word and Excel).

Excellent organisational and time management skills. Reliability, patience and the ability to work under pressure and to prioritise when faced with tight deadlines.

Good team working skills and a willingness to make a wider contribution to the team and the Embassy.

Experience in administrative work: setting up appointments and visits.
