Who are we? 

The British Embassy Helsinki is part of the UK Government’s global network representing British political, economic, and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for Senior Market Adviser for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). FDI is a cross-border investment made to establish a lasting interest in the host country economy.

Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will identify, attract, win and retain high value inward investment from Finland to the UK in key technologies. The focus will be on internationally scalable innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, SaaS, fintech, smart technologies, digitalisation and data economy.
The focus is predominantly on foreign direct investment with scope to work also with venture capital.

Roles and responsibilities: 

Our Senior Market Adviser for foreign direct investment will proactively identify and build relationships with Finnish mid-sized and large companies, as well as internationally scalable growth companies in key technologies that have an interest and capability to establish and grow their footprint in the UK via a UK subsidiary. This will include:

  • Proactively identifying leads for potential high value direct investment, initiating and building contacts with potential investor companies in Finland to encourage, advise and support them with establishment and growth of a UK subsidiary.
  • Maintain a dialogue with companies in the pipeline to identify issues in the investor journey, communicating at the same time with DBT’s sector teams and delivery partners in the UK to ensure that companies receive the support they need.
  • The Senior Market Adviser will promote the UK as investment destination to Finnish companies and convey the UK offer convincingly by obtaining detailed market knowledge and deeper understanding of the technology landscape and opportunities in the UK. They will develop and maintain a network of stakeholders in the UK, including DBT HQ and sector organisations, delivery partners and sector specialists to help investor companies land in the UK
  • The role will support the wider network, embassy and team objectives, including on cross-cutting events, visits and meetings. The Senior Market Adviser will collaborate with other teams in the embassy, as well as colleagues in British embassies in the Nordic-Baltic region.
  • There is a reporting requirement to timely capture, record and maintain information of interactions and services offered on our CRM system, as well as a requirement to deliver against agreed KPIs with evidenced investment wins.

Our Ideal Candidate shows: 

  • Fluency in Finnish and English, both written and spoken (minimum of C1 CEFR framework level language*);
  • University degree in a relevant field, such as business development or economics, international studies, or similar;
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in international business development, company internationalisation or investment promotion;
  • Proven experience in providing a timely service to external customers, with the ability to handle multiple customer relationships concurrently;
  • Ability to proactively source information in response to sometimes complex questions;
  • Capability to initiate, build and maintain networks with different types of stakeholders both in Finland and the UK.

Nice to have: 

  • Previous experience in one or more of the key technologies listed above (artificial intelligence, quantum technology, SaaS, fintech, smart technologies, digitalisation and data economy);
  • Some familiarity with the UK as a market.

This is a full-time permanent contract, 36.25 hours per week. 

Staff may be required to work beyond conditioned hours during the week, or at weekends, in such case they are entitled to take time off in lieu. TOIL hours must have prior approval.

The appointment is subject to professional background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Finland are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Finnish employment law and FCDO guidance for Country Based Staff.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Finland and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
