The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Senior Political Officer.

The main purpose of the job is the policy lead on external bilateral issues with Switzerland and Liechtenstein; to report on and to steer both countries in a direction consistent with the FCO’s Priority Outcomes and policy goals. This ranges from CT to sanctions to nuclear non-proliferation, from EU-Swiss relations to human rights; to lead all bilateral visits to Switzerland including the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos and regular Royal visits.; act as Deputy Post Security Manager including line management; and oversight of IT Support Officer.

 

In more detail, main responsibilities will include:

Political work

  • Policy lead on all bilateral lobbying requests to influence Swiss and Liechtenstein policy toward FCO Priority Outcomes;
  • Reporting and briefing on Swiss/Liechtenstein relations with other countries including with important neighbouring EU countries. Reporting on key thematic issues, CT, foreign fighters, nuclear proliferation, Syria and UN interventions;
  • Building networks & contacts: expand HMG’s network of key Swiss contacts to respond to HMG requests quickly including with EU Member States to better understand and shape policy.

 

Visits

  • Bilateral Visits Officer, leading and coordinating key ministerial visits including, programme and briefing content and logistics;
  • Contact point for Royal visits clearances and Close Protection licences.

 

Security Duties & Line Management

  • Deputy Post Security Manager (DPSM).

 

IT Support Officer

  • Line management and oversight of IT Support Officer.

 

Additional duties

  • Crisis Information Officer and Deputy Crisis Manager;
  • Co-ordination of RTSS van;
  • Act as Language officer.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • Core analytical and drafting skills;
  • Team management experience (minimum 5 years);
  • IT literacy.
  • Fluency in German and French (both oral and written).
