Main purpose of job:

You will play a key role in creating and delivering communication plans which support the UK Government’s objectives in Australia and New Zealand. 

You will seek and identify PR and communications opportunities on traditional and digital media which reach target audiences to promote UK prosperity and trade. 

This is an exciting time to join the team. The UK-Australia and UK-New Zealand Free Trade Agreements are about to enter into force and the UK will soon be joining the CPTPP. You will play a leading role in developing plans to support our business sector teams and make the most of trade shows, events, visits and activations. 


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Create earned and owned campaign plans to boost international trade and prosperity and for priority sectors across the network
  • Generate ideas for PR and media opportunities, organise media interviews, write briefings
  • Deliver PR and media support for trade and investment campaigns and events
  • Create a wide variety of written material including media releases, articles, blogs, case studies and promotional material including collateral and event invitations
  • Develop and implement (with the team) social media strategies which deliver your campaign objectives and deliver increased reach, engagement and conversion of our audiences (Twitter, LinkedIN, FB). Create, maintain and grow new and existing social networks
  • Stay up to date with brand guidelines and tone of voice. Using the latest assets to provide advice across the network and ensure own materials properly align
  • Develop forward look for campaigns and suitable story ideas to promote our objectives
  • Create and keep up-to-date segmented media contact lists on central data-base across trade, broadcast print and podcasts
  • Build strong relationships with trade and business media contacts and a comprehensive understanding of business and trade media landscape relevant to sectors we work in, particularly priority sectors
  • Identify opportunities for Consul Generals to speak to media, work with team to set up regular background briefings, coffees and networking events with key media
  • Write and compile the monthly International Trade newsletter
  • Monitor media, distribute media monitoring updates, monthly comms reporting and campaign evaluation
  • Evaluate analytics with team on a monthly basis, share learnings and best practice around network and to hubs in Singapore and London
  • Provide ongoing support to the wider team on using their own social media channels to engage audiences in their activities and campaign work; this may include work shops or one-on-one training sessions
  • Support internal communications by highlighting best practice, sharing good examples and promoting success across network and internationally
  • Support wider marketing, communications and visits across Australia and New Zealand as required

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

  • Manage own budget, including low cost campaigns. 
  • Opportunity to manage work placement students and deliver activity through design hubs in London and Hong Kong, Digital teams in Delhi and an Australia based Digital Content Creator. 
  • 3 to 4 years work experience in a communications role 
  • Excellent writing, proofing and editing skills for both traditional and new media 
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, delivering and evaluating communications activity/campaigns
  • Experience managing social media account(s)
  • Ability to create rich media content for social media eg: using smart phone for photography, video and editing; creation of infographics/gifs.
  • Knowledge of Australian business and trade media landscape, good relationships with media or proven ability to develop these contacts
  • Confidence in suggesting new ideas and challenging senior stakeholders if required

Language requirements: 

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent 

  • Experience with Adobe suite 
  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or equivilent
  • Experience using a website content management system 
  • Experience using an email marketing platform

Salary is at AU$ 80,507 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

A security check (and clearance) may be required prior to employment.

Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.

Working Patterns:

Full time employment (38 hrs). 

The British High Commission supports flexible and remote working for all its employees.
