Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

This job sits within a team at the heart of the UK’s trade relationship with the United States. The goal of building the UK-US trade relationship, including through a future FTA, has been established by the Prime Minister and President.   The trade policy team in the Embassy has a major role in supporting UK policy development and future negotiations.   The post holder for this job plays an important role in facilitating the Embassy’s input to this.

  • You will investigate timely trade policy issues, including CFIUS, and provide targeted briefing to Embassy officials to support policy development.

Washington is our highest-profile Embassy working on our most important bilateral relationship. That’s exciting, and makes for busy and rewarding jobs. But it’s not a treadmill – there’s good work-life balance and the ability to work flexibly. Washington DC itself is a great city which embraces both visible and invisible diversity – and our own staff reflect that. Beyond DC there is a fantastic region and country to enjoy and get to know for business and pleasure.

not just formal training and coaching (the Regional Training Centre is based here), but mentoring opportunities, regular workshops and seminars on specific skills led by Embassy experts. Other opportunities include covering for the absences elsewhere in the US or taking on corporate projects in this large Embassy of almost 20 Whitehall departments.

Essential on arrival:

  • A minimum of two years of commercial, NGO or government work experience is required
  • bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required ;
  • Excellent computer skills & communication skills.
